Peterites clinch 'A' Div. league title

St.Peter's College are the Coca Cola 'A' Division League
champions for 1998. The Peterites completed a successful
tournament by recording seven victories during the current
inter-school cricket season. Altogether they collected a total
of 122.634 points at an average of 6.813.
Ananda emerged runners up having recorded six victories during
the season. They collected a total of 101.714 points at an
average of 5.651. They were followed by Kalutara MV,
St.Joseph's, Raddoluwa MV and St.Sylvester's College. Last year
champions St.Sebastian's College were placed 14th in the overall
points standings.
Meanwhile Maris Stella College, Negombo clinched the 'B'
Division League title having registered six wins at an average
of 9.674. Lumbini MV with an average of 9.225 emerged runners
up. Kingswood College were placed third in the 'B' Division
League.
The Coca Cola knock out tournament will commence on March 25
with four first round matches down for decision. Last year's
champions St.Joseph's College will launch their defence for the
title with a match against St.John's College, Panadura at Darley
Road. St.Sebastian's have already received a walk over from
St.Anthony's College, Kandy.
The pre-quarterfinals will be worked off on March 29 and the
quarter-finals are scheduled for April 1. The venues for the
quarter-finals are Moratuwa Stadium, P.Saravanamuttu Stadium,
NCC and Viharamaha Devi Park.
The semi-finals will be worked off on April 3 and the venues are
P.Saravanamuttu Stadium and Viharamaha Devi Park. The final will
be played on April 5 at the SSC grounds, Maitland Place.

Tennakoon elected president of Kandy District CA

Former Dharmaraja College skipper and Kandy Schools allrounder
Tillina Tennakoon was elected president of the Kandy District
Cricket Association (KDCA) at the Annual General Meeting held at
the Asgiriya Pavilion.
Tillina Tennakoon is presently the People's Alliance organiser
for the Senkadagala electorate and the Chairman of the Kandy
Four Gravets and Ganga Wata Korale Pradeshiya Sabha. He is the
son of late Mr. Yasaratne Tennakoon former M.P. and Advisor to
Prime Minister Mrs. Sirimavo Bandaranaike before his demise last
year.
Tillina Tennakoon defeated old stager and a former Vice
President Lakshman Nugawela by 14 votes to 12 to clinch the top
slot as president. At 35, Tillina Tennakoon is the youngest to
hold post of President of KDCA. He played for Dharmaraja College
as an attacking batsman and spearheaded the team's attack with
his left arm medium pacers, for five years.
Tillina Tennakoon speaking to this correspondent said that he
will make every effort to promote and develop cricket in the
Kandy district and take the game to hitherto unknown areas. With
his wide experience as a cricketer and as an administrator
Tennakoon possesses the know how to put KDCA's cricket on the
right footing.
Former Sri Lanka Schools, Central Province CA and Dharmaraja
wicket keeper batsman and skipper Harold Ranasinghe was elected
as secretary. Ranasinghe is presently attached to the Kandy
Municipal Council as a Sports Officer after a stint abroad and
is also one of the cricket coaches at Trinity College, and a
senior cricket umpire. He is another able official who could
deliver the goods.
With a team like this, the KDCA is bound to do well and they
should have no difficulty in delivering the goods. This AGM saw
an almost a complete revamp of the earlier office bearers with
just a few of them being re-elected. The officials who were
re-elected are Deva Amunugama, Mahinda Senaviratne and Senaka
Niyangoda.
