Sri Lanka's willy off-spinner Ruwan Kalpage and spinning sensation
Muttiah Muralidharan combined effectively with penetrative bowling
spells to guide Janashakthi Insurance to a six wicket victory over
Aitken Spence Group in a Mercantile 'B' Division Cricket Match played
at the Bloomfield grounds recently.
Sri Lanka's brilliant all rounder Ruwan Kalpage captured 3 for 27 and
scored a swashbuckling 36 runs, whilst Muttiah Muralidharan captured 2
for 40. Former Sri Lanka youth player and wicket keeper batsman Upul
Fernando scored a brilliant 77 not out, while Charmara Soysa who was
adjudged Best Batsman in 1997/98 School Cricket season, scored a
breezy 16 not out.
Former Thomian and Sri Lanka 'A' opening batsman Manoj Mendis with a
dashing 93 runs top scored for Aitken Spence.
Aitken Spence 197 for 9 in 50 overs (Manoj Mendis 93, I. Ekanayake 36,
Ruwan Kalpage 3/27, Muttiah Muralidharan 2/40).
Janashakthi Group 201 for 4 in 36.3 overs (Pubudu Algama 29, Muttiah
Muralidharan 27, Upul Fernando 77 not out, Ruwan Kalpage 36, Chamara
Soyza 16 not out).
