Scorecard
Kerala's decision to bat first at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai backfired as they were bundled out for a paltry 165 on the first day. Sujit Somasundar (48) dug in for more than four hours, but the rest of the batsmen were given a stern test by the trio of Munaf Patel, Ramesh Powar and U Maulvi. Scorecard
At 43 for 4, Jyoti Prakash Yadav - the UP captain - must have thought he had erred after winning the toss in the morning. But all such fears were put aside as Suresh Raina and Gyanendra Pandey added 136 for the fifth wicket without being parted. They both hit nine fours and, on one occasion, Raina summoned the power to clear the ropes. Syeb Sahabuddin and Raja Prasad picked up two wickets each, but the other bowlers were kept at bay.
Hyderabad 223 for 7 (Khaleel 50*, Chatterjee 5-44) v Bengal
Scorecard
Utpal Chatterjee's marathon spell - in which he struck five times - and Ibrahim Khaleel's undefeated half-century were the highlights of the first day's play at Kolkata. After opting to bat, all the Hyderabad batsmen made starts, but none carried on to make a big impression. The 79-run stand between Arjun Yadav (45) and Khaleel raised hopes of a revival, before Chatterjee removed Yadav and two more batsmen quickly after. He bowled 18 maidens out of his 35 overs and conceded only 44 runs - figures that comprehensively tilted the balance Bengal's way.
Rajasthan 246 for 8 (Saxena 80, Kanwat 65) v Gujarat
Scorecard
A consistent performance by the Gujarat bowlers vindicated their captain's decision to field first at the KL Saini Stadium in Jaipur. The story seemed to be taking on rosier proportions when Rajasthan were tottering at 91 for 5, but then Vineet Saxena and Rahul Kanwat staged a partial recovery. Saxena batted for three minutes short of five hours and hit nine fours in his fighting 80, while Kanwat's 65 included only one boundary - a six. Shankar Rao ripped through the Vidharbha middle order as they were bowled out for only 244 on the first day of their match against Bihar at Nagpur. Mihir Diwakar also chipped in with three wickets as Vidharbha's visions of posting a big total were dashed. Himachal Pradesh 29 for 1 trail Orissa 246 by 217 runs
Scorecard
Orissa were restricted to 246 by some fine bowling by Sangram Singh on the first day of the Plate B fixture at Cuttack. Sukhbinder Singh's 49 and Subrat Behera's 38 stood out on a day when Sangram's effective medium-pace justified his decision to put the opposition in. Many of the batsmen frittered away decent starts, Shiv Sunder Das's 28 off 99 balls being the best example.
Saurashtra 187 for 6 (Bhatt 83*, Dhruv 58) v Services
Scorecard
Sudhakar Ghag and Fazil Mohammad gave Saurashtra an early scare as they reduced them to 42 for 5 after they had decided to bat first at the Harbax Singh Stadium in Delhi. But Prakash Bhatt and Rakesh Dhruv partially repaired the damage, by putting on 124 runs for the sixth wicket. Dhruv fell late in the day, but Bhatt will return tomorrow to continue the fight to take his team to a respectable total.
