Third SSCC bat scores century
By FORBES PERSAUD
BARATARIA Senior Comprehensive batsman Ricardo Persaud yesterday
became the third batsman to score a century in the championship
division of the Power Gen Bunty Lara Secondary Schools Cricket
Council competition this year.
Last week MLIO's Shawn Girdharry and Hillview's Kurvin
Cumberbatch became the first two century-makers in the 1998
competition, Girdharry hitting 134 against Toco and Cumberbatch
124 against North Eastern.
Playing for his school in a second round match against El Dorado
Senior at El Dorado, Persaud was in a punishing mood, blasting
20 fours and three sixes in his knock of 135 to see his team to
347 for nine declared.
He received good support from Saeed Mohammed (60) with whom he
featured in a sixth wicket partnership which yielded 176 runs.
Other good scores came from skipper Levi Lalloo (49) and Kevin
Gangadeen(37) while leg-spinner Amir Khan's took four wickets
for 127 runs to be the best bowler for El Dorado.
When the home team took to the crease, they found themselves
struggling against the Barataria bowlers and at stumps they had
progressed to 85 for 5, still needing 262 runs to make the
visitors bat again. Marcus Bengochea was on 20 not out and he
had Stephen Battoo, unbeaten on four, with him to carry the
fight to the opposition.
In another North East Group match at Arima, Arima Senior were
reeling at 73 for 8, still in need of another nine runs to avoid
the follow-on. They were replying to the Tranquillity Government
Secondary total of 182. The visitors owed their strong position
to Carlon Balkaran who has so far taken four wickets for 18
runs.
Both of these matches as well as the South Central game between
San Fernando Technical and Presentation College San Fernando at
Tech's ground end today. Pres are 50 without loss chasing
Technical's first innings total of 159.
In another game played on Saturday, Hillview College, playing at
home against North Eastern College, beat their visitors by an
innings and 51 runs.
The home team batted first and piled up 286 for six declared to
which the visitors responded with 171. Following on, Sangre
Grande were demolished for 64 by excellent bowling from Navin
Ramdhanie (5/14) and Kavishti Kokaram (2/24).
