Although almost everyone else has written off Michael Vaughan's chances of playing in this winter's Ashes series, it seems that Vaughan himself has not.
He underwent a fourth operation on his right knee last month after an unsuccessful attempt to return to playing earlier in the season and is now walking, albeit with the aid of crutches.
"I'm being ultra-positive looking to Australia, but that's the kind of person I am," Vaughan told The Guardian. "I always look to the best-case scenario rather than the worst. If I started playing in early December in Australia and manage to play really well with no reaction, and the team needs me, then who knows. It's a miracle case but you never know."
Most people considered Vaughan's earlier insistence that he might be fit in time for the VB Series which starts in January to be optimistic, so his latest claims will be treated with extreme caution.
He himself admitted that he would not try to come back until he was fully recovered. "I will not play for England when I'm not fit. I just want to make sure I get myself in the position where I can knock on Duncan Fletcher's door and say I'm available for selection.
He added that his main goal was to be ready for the World Cup which starts in early March, but to do that he will need to prove himself otherwise his selection would be considered too much of a gamble.
