Cameron White underlined his leadership potential by helping put Victoria in a commanding position against Queensland at the end of the third day of the Pura Cup match at the Gabba today.
Looking for their first outright victory at the Gabba since 1983, the Bushrangers have restricted Queensland to 7-233 in their second innings, a lead of 136 with one day remaining.
White, 20, has been touted a future Australian test captain after leading the undefeated Australian Under-19 side in the 2001-02 World Cup.
Following up for his four wicket haul on the first day, White took three catches and two wickets today to put Victoria in the driver's seat for outright points.
The Bulls looked like building a competitive total, with veteran Stuart Law and youngster James Hopes taking Queensland to 4-204.
Law, searching for his first century for Queensland since the 2000-01 season, was on 81 when he uppishly drove a ball from Andrew McDonald to mid-wicket and David Hussey dived full length to his right to snap up the ball inches from the ground.
Hopes departed soon after for 42 when he snicked a ball from fast bowler Mathew Inness to White at first slip who managed to pluck the ball as it seemed to be passing him on his left hand.
In a virtual repeat of the Hopes dismissal White again took a catch one handed to his left to dismiss Bulls keeper Wade Seccombe for 15 near the end of play.
Earlier in the day White took a regulation catch to dismiss Daniel Payne for 11 and with his leg spinners picked up 2-44.
His two wickets came in the 44th over when he had Bulls opener Clinton Perren lbw for 44 and two balls later bowled Steve Farrell for a duck after the debutant inexplicably shouldered arms.
The only bad news for the Bushrangers was fast bowler Shane Harwood who came off the ground when he aggravated a hip injury after slipping in his follow through after lunch.
Queensland had started the day well restricted Victoria to 374 and a lead of 97.
Accurate bowling by pacemen Joe Dawes and Shane Jurgensen saw the Victorians lose 4-23 in 11.4 overs in the first 50 minutes of the day's play.
Dawes struck in the first over having Jonathan Moss caught in the first slip by Love without adding to his overnight score of 33.
A few overs later he captured his third wicket for the innings when White was caught at 30 cover after skying at attempted pull shot.
Jurgensen captured the last two wickets of the Victorian innings to have Queensland's best figures of 4-72.
