West Indies Local: Combermere are champs

Combermere won the Banks Sir Everton Weekes Under-13 cricket title with a four-wicket victory over Lodge yesterday.

After Lodge's captain Nicholas Squires won the toss and decided to bat, his team compiled 124 for six wickets off their allotted 30 overs.

Combermere lost six wickets in reaching their target of 125 with seven balls to spare.

The Lodge total was built around an innings of 55 off 74 balls from Squires, who struck seven fours. Squires was well supported by all-rounder André Gill, who made 22.

They were involved in a 53-run third-wicket stand before Squires was caught and bowled by Sheldon Blades.

In reply, Combermere started badly, losing Chike Barrow leg-before-wicket in the first over bowled by Damien King, but a 91-run second-wicket stand between opener Jabbar Niles and Raydon Toppin laid the groundwork for Combermere's victory.

From a position of 93 for 1 in the 23rd over Combermere slumped to 102 for 6, but an unbeaten stand of 23 between Barbados Under-13 vice-captain Krishnan Hurdle (18) and Kevin McClean (7) saw them home.

At the Brewery: The Lodge School 124-6 off 30 overs (Nicholas Squires 55, André Gill 22; Cheyne Jones 3-29). Combermere 125-6 off 28.5 overs (Jebbar Niles 36, Raydon Toppin 40, Krishnan Hurdle 18 not out). Combermere won by 4 wickets.
