†WEST INDIES v ENGLAND 1985-86

At Port-of-Spain, Trinidad, March 31

15-Apr-1987
At Port-of-Spain, Trinidad, March 31. West Indies won by eight wickets. England put up a performance that exposed to a crowd of 21,000 what depths of incompetence they had reached. That P. B. H. May's criticisms had fallen on deaf ears as far as the captain was concerned had become clear in Barbados on the previous Friday when, after two days off following the Test defeat, the first practice was made optional - and Gower himself was one of the six who failed to attend. In the circumstances it was apposite that when Gower, in surrender, came on to bowl with West Indies needing eight to win, Haynes and Richards scored 9 off his only two deliveries; a single by Haynes being turned into a 5 by a throw over Downton's head with no-one backing up, then Richards completing his 50 with a cover drive next ball. England's batting, fielding and - apart from Emburey and Edmonds - their bowling proclaimed the lack of practice and resolve on a slow pitch which, had they been in the right frame of mind, would have given them an even chance of levelling the series.
