New Zealand v India, 2013-14

Wisden's review of the fifth ODI, New Zealand v India, 2013-14

15-Apr-2015
At Wellington (Westpac Stadium), January 31, 2014 (day/night). New Zealand won by 87 runs. Toss: India. One-day international debut: M. J. Henry.
New Zealand's players won a standing ovation after wrapping up a 4-0 victory over the deflated Indians. The heroes once more were Taylor and Williamson, who added a run-a-ball 152 to provide the meat of their 303 for five; no team had chased more to win on this ground, and India never threatened to do so. It was the pair's third century stand in the five games, taking their aggregate together to 463, a New Zealand record in a bilateral series. Taylor's 102 from 106 deliveries made him the first New Zealander to score back-to-back one-day international hundreds twice, while Williamson, with 88 off 91, was only the second player to pass 50 in every game of a five-match one-day series, after Pakistan's Yasir Hameed against New Zealand in 2003-04. Williamson's total of 361 runs beat another national record - Nathan Astle's 351 against Zimbabwe in 1997-98. India were quickly in trouble, and not even Kohli's 78-ball 82 or the determination of Dhoni, who moved past 8,000 one-day international runs, could save them. Seamer Matt Henry's four-wicket haul on debut summed up everything that had gone right for New Zealand in one of their most memorable one-day wins. Brendon McCullum described the series as the "most satisfying" he had played in.
Man of the Match: L. R. P. L. Taylor.
