Warner swims at the MCG

Plays of the Day from the first ODI of the CB series, between India and Australia at the MCG

The dive
In the third over of the Indian innings, Gautam Gambhir drove superbly, but David Warner put in a better dive at cover to save the boundary. However, the ball slipped out and kept going further away. Warner began swimming on the ground to try to keep the ball in his control. He couldn't stop the single, but his attempt brought out smiles on the other Australian fielders' faces.

The overthrows…
Not. In the second over of the game, Suresh Raina fielded one at cover, ran in towards the stumps, assumed the ball was dead and lobbed it towards mid-on, who was caught napping. Matthew Wade thought of taking the overthrows but stopped, only to see David Warner run towards him. The two went ahead for two overthrows even as India protested. The umpire agreed, and took away the runs. It would have been interesting, though, if there had been a run-out attempt involved.

The continuing redemption
R Vinay Kumar continues to get Warner out. On his debut, Vinay was demolished by Warner. Since then, though, Vinay has taken Warner out in one Twenty20 and today's ODI. Vinay to Warner in Tests: 36 balls, 43 runs, no wicket. In ODIs: eight balls, two runs, one wicket; in T20Is: six balls, 11 runs, one wicket.

The miscalculation
With the game reduced to 32 overs, the bowling restrictions were changed to a maximum of seven overs for two bowlers. Everyone seemed to have forgotten that Praveen Kumar and Vinay had already bowled seven each when Rahul Sharma came on to bowl the 32nd over. Two balls later the umpires realised it was Rahul's seventh too, and had to call MS Dhoni for a conversation before taking the ball away.

The adjustment
Australia had their innings interrupted during the 11th over, and came back to end up with 5 for 216. During the break computers and calculators got into action to arrive at the D/L target for India. And in a near-unique instance, they came up with a target of… 217. New cricket fans would have wondered what the fuss was all about.

Its just a waste discussing abt Indian Cricket. A nature of an Indian personality reflects, like culture, tradition and attitude, no matter where he goes or what he does...and thats what Dhoni is in now...like every other Indian Captain..(except Kapil Dev).He is Playing dirty politics inside the team....and he does? bocz BCCI depend on him a lot....and some lunitic admins from CSK part of BCCI...Dhoni is spoiling the team spirit....Lotsa team members hanging there just bcoz the money that is comin to them...also the power Dhoni have in BCCI can ruin there carrier. India will never or for another 50 yrs will rise the way AUS/SA or ENG.We will never produce genuine fast bowlers that can rip thru any quality batting line up...NEVER. Dhoni as an Captain is embarassing for Indian Cricket right now...I have so much to write.....like every other Indian....its just a waste of time...

Never mind, there is a big difference. Warner's innings took them to Series Victory. Vinay Kumar's bowling(!) can't do any such as of now.

An interesting match considering the different bowling units used & the wind & rain... I hope India use a more aggressive bowling approach in the following matches by adding some pace bowlers... The next Aus v Ind match at the WACA should see a return of Test fast bowlers - if not, another loss is on the cards...

    @om.pani & @Damo23... Re: D/L... ever heard of google?... :P... duckworthlewis.com is a NFP website which also has the calculator for T20 / ODI's...

Is the D/L model publicly available anywhere? I can only assume that the target was unchanged because Australia's then-low run rate - assumed to be a product of 50-over planning - equally negated fact that the two wickets lost would not be as detrimental to their cause over a 32-over innings.

Excellent performances by Hussey brothers, well done Australia. But.. Warner cant Bat =)

    Re: om.pani

Unfortunately an explanation of the D/L system would require a large text book and a PhD in pure mathematics likely. It's incredibly complicated.

It does take into account all sorts of factors, runs scored and wickets lost at the time of the rain interruption, so if Australia had not lost any wickets at the time of the rain interruption then the target would have definitely gone up, while if they'd lost more wickets then it would have reduced.

But it's almost impossible to explain the D/L system itself. I'm pretty sure that very few people in cricket know how it works, it's just a computer program that they feed all the score details into and it comes out with a number at the other end.

Loving the way Warner is getting it back... and coming back to the match I suppose we don need a spinning allrounder aka Jadeja in Australia try out Pathan and bench either Rahul Sharma or Ashwin and get in Zaheer to support the Kumars who are doing decent job I know many would be wondering why Vinay is in the team and he s not doing bad though and last this match was not lost by bowlers it was due to lack of commitment by the batsman Ashwin went for runs but you cant expect them to grip a wet ball and bowl maidens :(...

The selection of the Indian team is still a mystery. Why they dropped Sehwag and they are playing 2 specialist spinners and two spinning allrounder while Australia had 4 fast bowlers,so select the team according to the given condition not based on the previous performance.Ashwin is a good player but he has not shown any threat in Australia as a spinner.I hope in the coming matches the selection is merit based.

Dhoni made mistake again . Why did u need 3 spinners. Ashwin is a waste 48 runs in 5 overs /no fielding/not run in 22 yards. Pathan should be there.
