Shivnarine Chanderpaul carried West Indies to a thrilling final-ball one-wicket win in the first one-day international in Port of Spain after being left needing 10 off two deliveries. He responded with a straight drive before flicking a Chaminda Vaas full toss over deep midwicket to send the Trinidad crowd into wild celebrations.
An enthralling match had swung one way then the other before the final act. Sri Lanka recovered from 49 for 5 to post a competitive total with Chamara Kapugedera hitting a career-best 95 in a record sixth-wicket stand of 159 with Chamara Silva. West Indies were well placed on 109 for 1 before Chris Gayle fell for 52, and when Dwayne Bravo was run out the lower-order was exposed. Sri Lanka appeared to have done enough, but Chanderpaul had other ideas.
He'd struggled to find the boundary, and the strike, in the final stages but clipped a four off the final ball of the 49th over. Only three runs came off the first four balls of the last over from Vaas before Chanderpaul slammed a drive past mid-off, followed by the match-clinching six which sailed over Mahela Jayawardene on the fence. Jayawardene knew he wasn't going to haul in a last-ditch catch and although he made his displeasure clear at the rare blemish from Vaas, on reflection he'll find plenty to be pleased about from his team's performance.

Shah fifty defies Sussex

Owais Shah's 72 was the only innings of substance on a bitterly cold opening day of the season in which 14 wickets fell at Lord's

Owais Shah's gritty 72 was the only innings of substance on a bitterly cold opening day of the season in which 14 wickets fell at Lord's. Sharing in an unbeaten stand of 57 with Arun Harinath, Shah and MCC outwitted the Champion County, Sussex, and are in a good position from which to take the match by the scruff.
Like the customary smattering of hardy spectators, Chris Adams, the Sussex captain, appeared to be duped by the early spring sunshine and clear blue skies. The early warmth gave way to a biting cold, and by tea, Sussex had fallen to 171 all out with Steve Kirby and Graham Onions sharing seven wickets. Chris Nash top-scored with 33, but it was a day for bowlers, however deceitful the weather gods were trying to be. In April, it was ever thus.

Saurashtra claimed a historic win, their first at a national-level tournament, with a six-wicket victory over Bengal in the final of Vijay Hazare Trophy, India's premier domestic one-day competition.
It was the bowlers that set up the win in Visakhapatnam, with Bengal shot out for a paltry 86 after deciding to bat first. Jayesh Odedra wrecked the Bengal top order with three quick wickets, and new-ball partner Sandip Maniar chipped in with one wicket as Bengal were reduced to 15 for 4.
Shukla and Debabrata Das led a brief resistance with 29-run stand, and wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha was the only other batsman to reach double figures. Saha hung around for 60 balls during his undefeated 25, and tailenders Avik Chowdhury and Ranadeb Bose also stayed at the crease, but runs came at a slow trickle. In all, Bengal played out 39.2 overs, scoring only 86. Odedra's ten overs fetched four wickets, while conceding only 16 runs. Left-arm spinner Dhurv took 3 for 23, while Balkrishna Jadeja, Ravindra Jadeja and Maniar shared the remaining three.

Michael Davidson devastated Wellington with four wickets in 11 balls to set Canterbury on the path to what could be their first State Championship title in a decade. Chasing 249 for victory, Wellington's top order disintegrated as they faced a nine-over spell before stumps and crashed to 14 for 4.
Davidson picked up 4 for 1 from his four overs, beginning with Matthew Bell bowled for 1. Michael Parlane followed for 0, Grant Elliott was lbw without scoring and Stephen Gellatly was bowled second ball, narrowly avoiding a king pair.
Wellington need only draw to collect the title but with no rain expected on the final day, they will require a remarkable fightback. At the close of the fourth day, Neal Parlane was not out on 5 and Chris Nevin was yet to score.

A round-up of the Standard Bank Pro20 matches that took place on April 9

Cape Cobras thumped Zimbabwe in their Pro20 game at Newlands by restricting them to 84 and knocking off the required runs with more than seven overs to spare. Charl Langeveldt picked up three wickets while Vernon Philander, Tyron Henderson and Con de Lange took two each. Cobras are now at the top of the table with 20 points, while Zimbabwe languish at the bottom with four.
Langeveldt had Brendan Taylor caught behind for a duck in the first over and followed it up by the wicket of Hamilton Masakadza in his next over as Zimbabwe lost their openers with only four runs on the board. The wickets continued to tumble as no Zimbabwe batsman showed any inclination to put up a fight. Elton Chigumbura's 18 was the innings' highest score. The last five batsmen contributed 28 to the total.
Cobras' openers, Andrew Puttick and Henry Davids, seemed eager to complete the chase themselves as they raced to 60 in 7.4 overs. However, Ray Price trapped Davids leg before for 20 and in his next over bowled Gibbs for 1 so Henderson joined Puttick at the crease to finish off the game.

TP Singh's unbeaten 63 rescued the ICL India XI following a terrible start, but their total of 141 wasn't to be enough as Damien Martyn steered the ICL World XI to a comfortable eight-wicket win in the inaugural match of the fourth and latest tournament of the Indian Cricket League.
Soon after R Sathish, the India XI captain, opted to bat, his side were left in dire straits at 9 for 4. Abhishek Jhunjhunwala was out for a duck in the first over bowled by Johan van der Wath; a new rule allowing player challenges enabled the batsman appeal against the on-field umpire's decision to adjudge him lbw, but the challenge was lost as the third umpire upheld the field umpire's verdict.

Hamish Bennett's seven-wicket haul helped dismiss Wellington for 188 on a rain-affected third day at Basin Reserve and gave Canterbury a slender 27-run lead in the first innings of the State Championship final. Canterbury ended the day on 10 for no loss.
Rain delayed the start until 3.15 pm local time and when play resumed Brandon Hiini broke the 48-run stand for the seventh wicket by having Dewayne Bowden caught behind by Kruger van Wyk for 22. The innings folded quickly thereafter - the last three wickets fell for 11 runs - with Bennett taking the three remaining wickets to add to his four on the second day. Luke Woodcock remained unbeaten on 35.
Canterbury's openers, Todd Astle and Michael Papps, batted for seven overs and remained unbeaten on 3 and 6 respectively.

An allround show enabled Saurashtra to overcome Vidarbha by five wickets and enter the final of the Vijay Hazare Trophy in Visakhapatnam. Chasing 213, Saurashtra rode on half-centuries from Chirag Pathak and Shitanshu Kotak to reach the target with 15 balls to spare. This will be Saurashtra's maiden appearance in the final of this tournament.
Vidarbha's decision to bat first did not pay off as they would have expected. Faiz Fazal, the in-form opener, fell in the very first over and it was left to Amit Paunikar to grind out a patient 108-ball 63. He received good support from Ravi Jangid, whose 67-ball 51 provided the innings with some momentum.

Bangladesh suffered one of their most embarassing defeats in one-dayers when they went down by 152 runs in the first match at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.
A 145-run fourth-wicket partnership between Mohammad Yousuf and Shoaib Malik propelled Pakistan to an imposing 322 for 7 and set up the victory on a flat batting strip, before the seamers dented Bangladesh's reply. Two interruptions early in the chase - caused by floodlight failures - reduced the target to 282 from 39 overs and offered no respite as the innings folded up within 30 overs.
