1999 West African Championships to be held in 2000
Gambia Cricket Association secretary, Mr. Sonny Manly-
Rollings, reckons nothing happens too quickly in West
Africa.
The West African Championships are proving that with the
1999 Quadrangular tournament now almost certain to played in
February, umm, 2000.
While the late 1990s have been dubbed the `Communication
Age' in so-called Western countries, easy correspondence is
not taken for granted in the West African countries with a
cricket presence - Gambia, Sierra Leone, Ghana and Nigeria.
Mr. Manly-Rollings, who is the organiser of the 1999 event
which has seen two deferments of the annual tournament, said
Sierra Leone was the only confirmed participant for a slated
December appearance.
"Ghana wants it postponed to February while getting through
to Nigeria is a nightmare," Mr. Manly-Rollings said.
Sierra Leone's participation would be a remarkable triumph
of the human spirit considering a civil war which various
aid organisations have observed to be one of the worst they
have seen.
