Cooper rescues SA after sublime Holland spell

Tom Cooper's composed and unbeaten 60 was enough to guide South Australia to a desperately tight one-wicket victory, after Jon Holland's extraordinary 6-29 had taken Victoria to the brink in the domestic limited overs match at Adelaide Oval.

The Redbacks were on course for a double bonus-point win over the Bushrangers when 0 for 45 in pursuit of the visitors' meagre 123, before Holland intervened with a rare spell of slow left-arm spin.

Turning the ball appreciably and varying his pace and flight to follow up a strong showing in the preceding Sheffield Shield match, Holland collected the best domestic limited overs figures by a Victorian. His effort in an unbroken 13-over stint reduced SA to 8 for 83 when Joe Mennie was dismissed.

Cooper found an ally in Gary Putland, who had earlier nipped out Rob Quiney and Cameron White in the first over of the match to set the tone for the Bushrangers' innings, and together they took SA to within four runs before the tailender was bowled by Jayde Herrick.

Peter Siddle, playing his first match since his Test match exertions against India, bowled the next over, and Cooper flicked his second ball over midwicket to hand SA a win and a bonus point for reaching the target within 40 overs. They are now top of the competition table, a point ahead of Tasmania.

Victoria's innings had been a struggle from the start, wickets shared between Putland, Jake Haberfield, Aaron O'Brien and Mennie.
