clears the front leg and goes to cow again, career-best score for Root, he's sealed an eight-wicket win for England in clinical style
England vs Bangladesh, 1st Match Group A at London, Jun 01 2017 - Ball by Ball Commentary
6.30pm: So, we've had runs, we've had hundreds, we've had sunshine and more... The Champions Trophy is officially up and running. Mohammad Isam's report will tell the story of the day and there'll be much more reaction on the site shortly. Thanks for joining us, we'll be back for more with full coverage of Australia v New Zealand from Edgbaston tomorrow. Cheerio!
6.15pm: England avoid being Bangla-ed for the third successive time at a major tournament, despite emerging a little bloodied from the first half of the game. Partnerships of 159 and 143 saw off the threat of an upset and meant Tamim Iqbal's hundred was in a losing cause. Incidentally, that was the first time 300 has been successfully chased in the Champions Trophy; it was also England's third-highest of all time, completed with almost three overs to spare.
Joe Root is named Man of the Match for his unbeaten 133: "There's a lot of confidence in the dressing room, we back each other and it rubs off on everyone. Nice know you've got guys like Ben Stokes waiting to come in. [Plan was] making sure we had plenty of wickets in hand at the back end, one of the top four being not out between 70 and 100, we did a really good job. [Pleased to score hundred] That worked out today, thrilled to bits to get off to a good start. Ankle's all right - more of a calf issue - hopefully just bad cramp."
Bangladesh's captain Mashrafe Mortaza: "I think 305 was a little bit short, but they batted really well and took the game away from us. Initally, getting used to the pitch, the openers take a bit of time; at the end, when we have wickets in hand, we have to do better. [Balance of side?] First match we decided to go with eight batters, but we have to think about it. The main bowlers must bowl better. [Tamim catch?] I think the umpires' decision is final."
England captain Eoin Morgan: "When the guys bat like that, it's certainly a lot easier than it used to be. Joe Root and an in-form Alex Hales are huge factors. Joe is the glue in our side, he's scored a lot or runs, he's not slow, it's at pace and today he was outstanding. I want to lead from the front this tournament, put ourselves in a good position after this game, two to go in the group stages. [Bowling display?] I thought from 25 to 40, we minimised the damage, Tamim can be destructive but they didn't get away from us. [Miss Rashid?] No, thought we went with the right decision, considering the short boundary and it didn't turn a great deal. Went with Moeen, who's been in great form, unfortunate that Chris Woakes limped out. Chris is the biggest concern, has to go for a scan, the rest of the guys aren't a major worry. We'll assess everything in the morning."
tossed up and thumped over the leg side, Root trying to finish it in one hit... lands just short
"This will be the first time Fizz has failed to take a wicket in an ODI in a completed innings...." says Edwin D'Souza, a little peremptorily. But then Mashrafe brings on Mosaddek Hossain, to fulfill the prophecy. Six needed
Rubel goes full and wide, lofted over cover for a couple more to bring up the England 300
short ball, Root swishes across the line, sends a huuuuuge top edge into the Kennington sky... but Mustafizur, who had a way to run, can't get close enough to lay a hand on it at midwicket and Root survives
full in the channel, Morgan squeezes down on it for a single to cover
"I predicted Eng will win by 47-48th over. Looks like my prophecy is coming true!" Pat on the back and a lollipop for SJ
short ball, sits up for a pulled single to deep backward square leg
full and inviting, Root leans back and slices over the off side, not his cleanest stroke but it lands in front of the sweeper and outruns him to the boundary
full on off stump, driven back down the ground for one
Rubel continues, England needing just 16 now
"The Fizz seems a bit flat," observes Lawrence
cutter, full outside off, Root latches on to it - and sends the ball arrowing away in front of deep cover, supreme timing and placement for another boundary
Morgan backs away and swats one through point
full toss outside off and this is met with a no-nonsense belt through the covers for four
touch full, in the slot, Morgan swings high and handsome into the leg side... clears the man on the rope for six! England's requirement now drops under a run a ball
Another stats pearl for you: This is the most runs by England's second and third wickets combined in an ODI
pitched up, Morgan drops his bat on it
fullish, Root clears the front leg and swings one through mid-off
Five overs to go, 32 required... Can England avoid doing a South Africa at the Ageas Bowl on Saturday?
Parth: "Root barely has to move or he can barely move??" Possibly a bit of both. Bet he's looking forward to his post-match frothy cold one ice bath
pitched up, on the pads but Morgan can't get a good swing and toe-ends to midwicket
full, fires in an off-stump yorker, Morgan jams down on it
"TBH I'm never confident of an England win, but I always feel a lot better when the RRR goes under 6." Almost there, James...
short of a length, wide of the stumps, 140kph/87mph and swatted down to third man
The RRR is exactly a run a ball now...
slings down a low full toss, Root barely has to move as he slugs four more over midwicket
fired up towards the blockhole and dug out back to the bowler
pitched up and dispatched, doooooooown toooooooown! Root brings out the long handle, dumping Rubel into the crowd at long-on
