Chennai Super Kings vs Sunrisers Hyderabad, Dubai

Pro Tip:
Consider recent form but also keep in mind the players who have done well in Super Kings-Sunrisers clashes in the last few seasons.
Our XI: Jonny Bairstow (wk), David Warner, Shane Watson, Faf Du Plessis(c), Ambati Rayudu(vc), Kane Williamson, Sam Curran, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Rashid Khan, T Natarajan, Deepak Chahar
Substitutes: Josh Hazlewood, Piyush Chawla, Manish Pandey, MS Dhoni
NOTE: We might not always be able to tip you off about late injury (or other relevant) updates, so please finalise your team after the toss.
Player availability: All players are available for selection. Dwayne Bravo and Ambati Rayudu have recovered from a knee injury and hamstring injury respectively.
Captain: Faf du Plessis
du Plessis has been the only bright spot for the Super Kings so far in the tournament. He has scored 173 runs at a SR of 149.14. He should continue his good form if Super Kings want to turn the tables and get to the top half. We are backing him to do so. He has been under pressure in all the games so far and has come out on top on all occasions although he has been able to take his team home only once.
Vice-captain: Ambati Rayudu
Rayudu was Man of the Match in the sole game he played in the season. Super Kings went on to win that game and that shows how important he is to the side. He has recovered from the hamstring injury and must be raring to go. He will be eager to put up a show against an opponent he has done really well in the past - he has scored 241 runs at an average of 80.33 against Sunrisers since 2018.
Hot Picks
Jonny Bairstow: Bairstow has scored two fifties in three innings so far this season though his strike rate has not been on the higher side. Him keeping the wickets could also give you bonus points. He cannot be left out.
Rashid Khan: Rashid came back with a bang in the match against Capitals, with a stellar economy and three wickets. He will definitely take that confidence into this game. Though Rashid has been on the expensive side on a couple of occasions against the Super Kings, he has taken the most number of wickets for the Sunrisers against the Super Kings since 2018.
Shane Watson: Watson has had decent starts in the two games but has failed to go on to make a big score. A week's break is probably what he needed to get back into the groove. Watson also has a terrific record against the Sunrisers since 2018, scoring 310 runs in 6 innings at a strike rate of 159.79 including two fifties and a hundred.
Differential Picks
T Natarajan: Even though he had only one wicket against his name in the previous game, he was extremely impressive with his yorkers at the death. Natarajan bowled yorker after yorker, pinning the batsmen down. If he continues to bowl as well, which we are backing him to do, wickets aren't too far away.
Sam Curran: Curran should hold his place even though Bravo is fit and available. He provides the spark his team needs with both bat and ball. Bowling overs up top and at the death, giving him a higher chance of taking wickets. As a floater, Curran has also shown us what he can do with the bat.
Alternate Scenarios
  • Dwayne Bravo is fit and available for selection but since Curran has done well, Bravo may not find a place in the XI unless Hazlewood is dropped. If Bravo plays, replace Natarajan with him.
  • Faf du Plessis is good choice for captain based on current form. But if you feel the break could break the momentum, Kane Williamson is the best back-up option especially if Sunrisers bat second, as he averages 50.77 batting second in the IPL since 2018.
  • Bhuvneshwar Kumar to Shane Watson since 2018 - 54 balls, 41 runs and three wickets. It is a gamble to pick Watson but he gets going, he cen get destructive.
  • Given Sunrisers' recent struggles against leg spin, Piyush Chawla can be brought in especially if CSK bowl second as dew isn't as big a factor at this venue. Sunrisers vs leg spin in IPL 2020 - 72 balls, 82 runs, six wickets.
