Cricinfo Australia has been voted the best sports site in Australia for 2005 by a leading technology magazine. The NetGuide Web awards picked www.baggygreen.com.au ahead of the major AFL, rugby league, soccer and multi-sport publications.
Users submitted their favourite sites to NetGuide before the magazine reviewed the more than 4000 news, entertainment and sports nominations to create a short-list. "The contenders really were a stellar lot," the magazine said. "However, after much deliberation, the judges were unanimous in their choices. If we've learnt anything over the last few months as we meticulously trawled through the entries, it's that Australian web sites can hold their own against those from any country in the world."
Peter English, Cricinfo's Australasian editor, thanked the readers for the nomination and said the site would continue to produce live scoring and detailed coverage of Australia's international matches as well as regular world-class features from our global stable of writers. "The Australian cricket team has led the way on the field and we hope to follow their lead online with the website," English said. "The Australia-South Africa Test series is another big one for us and our readers can expect more top-quality experiences."
Cricinfo Australia began in 1998 and has grown rapidly while adding special features such as Statsguru, the statistics database used by international teams and regular supporters to analyse player performances. Approximately 1 million unique users log on to Cricinfo each month in Australia while the company's global homepage attracts 9 million visitors a month.
