Gibbs, who admitted to accepting a payment for under-performing during a one-day international in India in 1999-2000, will be questioned by a high-level team of Crime Branch officials, led by Joint Commissioner of Police Ranjit Narayan, on "all aspects" of the scandal.
The story came to light in May 2000 after police tapped a phone conversation of the late South African captain, Hansie Cronje, during that same tour of India. "Gibbs will join investigations on October 12," announced the Chief Spokesperson of the Delhi Police, Deependra Pathak.
Among other things, investigators will seek answers from Gibbs on questions such as: Who had contacted him, what was the information sought, and who else was involved in the match-fixing case. Gibbs has never before faced the Indian police, having opted out of previous tours to India, along with his team-mate, Nicky Boje.
Gibbs is scheduled to arrive in Delhi along with two of his lawyers, before joining his teammates for South Africa's opening match of the Champions Trophy, against New Zealand in Mumbai.
He has already served a six-month ban, imposed by South Africa's cricket authorities, although his teammate Boje has denied any wrongdoing. Both of
them answered a detailed questionnaire put to them by the
Delhi Police in 2004.
