The 2005 season has only just begun, but it seems as though the young generation is really starting to take over. One week after 15-year old Safania Naguakar became the youngest member of the Israel centuries club, 17-year old Dani Hotz scored his first league ton, a glorious 120 for Ra'anana in their 61-run win over Tel Aviv. In a full weekend's activity in Division 1, defending champions Lions Lod, as expected, trounced Be'er Sheva A by 9-wickets, and Ashdod A began their season in impressive style, easily defeating season rivals Young Ashdod by the same margin.
The Ra'anana opening pair of Solly Bergman and Hotz gave their team the perfect start against a Tel Aviv side featuring a number of new faces. Bergman (38) was smartly stumped by Steve Leigh off Dovi Myers, ending a stand of 109 for the first wicket. With Hotz punishing anything loose and showing lightening speed between the wickets, runs continued to flow, even as wickets fell at the other end. Hotz was eventually out trying to force the pace in the closing overs, and Ra'anana finished on 225 for 5.
Despite losing 2 early wickets to the impressive medium pace bowling of Craig Mischel, Stanley Perlman kept his team in with a chance with a typical innings that featured powerful shots both sides of the wicket. However when he was out for 53, with the score on 88, so effectively ended any chance Tel Aviv may have had of reaching their target. Sanjay Gupta (38) played a particularly impressive innings, before being undone by a ball from Des Moss that kept very low and hit the base of off stump. Within a few minutes of Gupta's dismissal the innings was over, as Moss wrapped up the tail to finish with excellent figures of 5 for 20.
Lions Lod showed typical efficiency in defeating Be'er Sheva A in Be'er Sheva on Saturday. George Sheader (34) was the only batsman to put up any resistance for the home side as Isaac Massil (3 for 14) made the initial breakthrough, before Yefet Nagavkar (3 for 35) and Benny David (2 for 32) worked their way through the middle order. Be'er Sheva's total of 125 was never going to be competitive, and they didn't help themselves by dropping a couple of catches as well. By the time Nagavkar (58) was out the game was all but over, and Shalom Rubin (53*) and Eshkol Solomon (12*) saw things through to the end for Lions, passing their target in the 25th over.
Gershon Waskar (4 for 14) was the star performer for Ashdod A, as they dismissed Young Ashdod for just 73 in Ashdod on Saturday. It was a miserable effort by Young Ashdod, who were saved from even greater embarrassment by number 9 batsman Eitan Benjamin, who top scored with 29. Hillel Awasker (26*) led the Ashdod reply, as they cruised to an easy win which will give them a big confidence boost for the remainder of the season.
In somewhat of a surprising result in a Division 2 fixture played at Hadar Yosef on Friday, Lod defeated Neve Yonatan by the massive margin of 152 runs. Batting first, Lod totaled 217 for 8, with Suji (73) and Ravi Khanna (37) both amongst the runs. Shimshon Razpurker (3 for 44) was the pick of the Neve Yonatan bowlers.
An inspired bowling performance from Joel Varsulkar (5 for 33), backed up by Asher Penkar (3 for 25), left the Neve Yonatan innings in tatters, dismissed for just 65.
