The Chief Executive of the ICC, David Richards, has requested clarification
from the Sri Lankan board as to the current status of Thilanga Sumathipala
according to a report in the Daily Mirror newspaper today.
The Sri Lankan board had previously informed the ICC that the Chairman of
the Interim Committee, Vijaya Malalsekera, would be its representative at
the ICC's Annual General Meeting, which is to be held in London in June.
Richards, however, states in his letter: "While your fax states that Mr
Malalsekera will attend the Executive Board meeting in June, it does not
tell me whether Thilanga Sumathipala continues to hold the office of
Director representing your Board until the meeting. If it is your attention
that Mr Malalsekera's appointment is to take immediate effect, you need to
say so explicitly. In doing so, you should make it clear that Mr Sumathipala
's appointment has been revoked by your board."
His letter also appears to question the legality of Sumathipala's dismissal:
"As I understand corporate law, a person once nominated as a director
remains in that position until he either resigns or is formally replaced by
the organisation which appointed him."
