Karachi, March 25: Two former Pakistan captains were picked amongst
the International Cricket Council (ICC) All-Star Eleven. Imran Khan
and Wasim Akram were named in a strong 11-man squad that was selected
by a nine-man selection committee keeping in view their contribution
to cricket with reference to one-day internationals since 1975.
The selection committee included Sir Garfield Sobers, Neil Harvey,
John Reid, Dicky Bird, Barry Richards, Bishen Bedi, Duleep Mendis,
Mushtaq Mohammad, Andy Pycroft with Ravi Shastri as moderator.
Imran Khan led Pakistan to World Cup victory in 1992 at Melbourne.
Imran played in 175 matches taking 182 wickets besides scoring 3,807
runs. Wasim has played 295 matches in which he has bagged 415 wickets
and scored 3,130 runs.
The squad includes four Australians, three West Indians, two
Pakistanis, Sachin Tendulkar and Sir Richard Hadlee who took 158
wickets in 115 matches besides scoring 1,751 runs.
The team is: Greg Chappel (Australia) (captain), Sachin Tendulkar
(India), Adam Gilchrist (Australia), Sir Vivian Richards (West
Indies),Dean Jones (Australia), Clive Lloyd (West Indies), Imran Khan
(Pakistan), Wasim Akram (Pakistan), Sir Richard Hadlee (New Zealand),
Shane Warne (Australia) and Joel Garner (West Indies).
Meanwhile, Saurav Ganguly, the Indian captain, is expected to replace
an injured Saeed Anwar in an Asian XI that will face Rest of the World
in a match at Dhaka on April 8. Saeed is nursing a knee injury for
which he is taking treatment in England.
