After a very successful half season with Gauteng ex West Indies international Kenny Benjamin has decided to break his ties with the powerful Johannesburg based team and move across the highway to sign for Easterns.
Some financial disagreements with the Gauteng management forced Benjamin to sign a contract with Easterns and take over from another West Indies international Phil Simmons as Easterns overseas professional.
"Easterns has a very young squad and I am looking forward to work and train with the youngsters" Benjamin said on a local television cricket show. "I am sorry to leave all the friends I made during the previous season, but I can not work with the Gauteng management. The Management and I have however parted on friendly terms" he added. Gauteng Cricket Board General Manager Zigi Wadvalla echoed this sentiment.
Having taken 38 wickets at an average of 15.63 in his six first class matches for Gauteng, Easterns can expect a similar haul of wickets from the tall and friendly West Indies player, but it is his experience that will help the young Easterns squad through the season. The cricket knowledge he will impart will be invaluable to the future of Easterns cricket.
Benjamin will make his debut for his new adopted province when they take on Border at Benoni on the 6th October.
