Kent lead Division One after win

Kent completed an impressive run chase against Surrey to snatch a win in a match that had had draw written all over it from the first day. The win propels Kent back to the top of the table. Chasing 231, after dismissing Surrey for 350, Justin Kemp carried Kent over the line with 47 from 37 balls. A series of rapid cameos from the top order had ensured Kent were in with a chance going into the closing overs. When Surrey were 240 for 2 during the morning session the match was drifting nowhere. But Martin van Jaarsveld removed Graham Thorpe (47) and Min Patel then worked his way through the lower order, leaving a chase that Kent time perfectly.

Hampshire pulled off another of their stunning final-innings comebacks after Sussex had been favourites to complete victory. They lost their last seven wickets for 68 runs as Dimitri Mascarenhas and Sean Ervine prevented Sussex scoring the 104 more they needed at the start of the day. At 193 for 3 Sussex were within touching distance of their target. But Adams was bowled and when Murray Goodwin fell for 71 Hampshire sniffed their opportunity and grabbed it. They also avoided a pitch penalty as the Rose Bowl track was only rated "below average" after being reported to the ECB.

Middlesex wrapped up a comprehensive innings and 23-run win over Glamorgan to leave them rooted the foot of the Division One table. Glamorgan lost their last six wickets for 71 runs after some resistance from Mark Wallace (64), Sourav Ganguly (55) and Michael Powell (58). Scott Styris rushed through the tail, taking 5 for 57, while Jamie Dalrymple grabbed the important early wicket of Wallace to set Middlesex on their way.

Monty Panesar completed a superb all round match to guide Northamptonshire to an 82-run win over Worcestershire. Northants were slight favourites going into the final day and when Panesar had Ben Smith caught by Martin Love, Worcestershire were staring down the barrel. Panesar finished the innings with 6 for 77 and match figures of 9 for 168.

Yorkshire completed their second huge run chase against Leicestershire this season, successfully reaching their target of 397, by six wickets, at Scarborough. There are striking similarities to their earlier clash at Grace Road, when Yorkshire chased 404 and also won by six wickets. Today, it was Joe Sayers (104) and Anthony McGrath (89) who put Yorkshire on course with Phil Jaques and Ian Harvey both cracking half-centuries to make a seemingly testing run chase something of a stroll.

Derbyshire have turned their match with Durham on its head after a powerful batting display on the third day. Michael di Venuto converted his overnight 112 into a double-century, while Hasan Adnan made 104 in a stand of 272 with di Venuto. Even when Liam Plunkett and Dale Benkenstein took two wickets each Derbyshire were not finished. Travis Friend, the former Zimbabwean allrounder, struck a boundary-filled 82 and Graeme Welch an unbeaten 67 to allow Luke Sutton a late evening declaration, with a healthy lead of 329. The Durham openers survived six overs but the momentum is with Derbyshire going into the final day.

Lancashire's batsmen followed Essex's example and filled their boots at Old Trafford. Mal Loye fell six runs short of his second double-century of the season and Paul Horton missed out on his maiden first-class hundred by a single. Runs didn't flow at a great place as the Essex spinners kept a lid on the scoring rate, but Andrew Symonds provided a late burst with 54 of 57 balls. However, without declarations this match will drift to a draw on the final day.
