Mumbai Indians vs Delhi Capitals, final, Dubai

Pro Tip: The Mumbai Indians have won 4 out of the last 5 games against the Delhi Capitals and start as the favourites. So pick more players from their side on form and recent record against the opponent. Also back the experienced and big-match players from either side.
Our XI: Rohit Sharma, Quinton de Kock (wk), Shikhar Dhawan, Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav (capt), Kieron Pollard, Marcus Stoinis, Kagiso Rabada, Trent Boult, Jasprit Bumrah (vice-capt), R Ashwin
Substitutes: Ishan Kishan, Anrich Nortje, Hardik Pandya, Shimron Hetmyer
NOTE: We might not always be able to tip you off about late injury (or other relevant) updates, so please finalise your team after the toss.
Player availability: Trent Boult went off the field after a couple of overs in the first qualifier. Rohit Sharma had said he should be fit in time for the final but there has been no official update. All other players are available for selection.
Captain: Suryakumar Yadav
Yadav has played quite a few match-winning innings in the tournament so far. He is known to bring out his A-game when it matters the most. He has scored 461 runs at a strike rate of 148.23 so far this season. In three innings against the Capitals, he has scored two fifties and an average of 58.
Vice-captain: Jasprit Bumrah
Bumrah is now the second-highest wicket-taker in the tournament with 27 wickets at an economy of 6.71. He has been at his lethal best of late, taking ten wickets in the last 3 games at an economy of 3.75. Two out of his last three games have been against the Capitals and he has picked up seven wickets in those two games at an economy of 3.88.
Hot Picks
Kieron Pollard: A player like Pollard is a must-have. He has scored 269 runs this season at a strike rate of 190.44 and by all means is a big-match player as suggested by his terrific record in the IPL finals - 171 runs in 5 innings at a strike rate of 194.31 and an average of 57. He can also chip in with the ball and is a brilliant fielder as well.
Marcus Stoinis: Stoinis has been terrific for the Capitals this season. He has been providing the impetus with the bat towards the end and has also chipped in with the ball. Now, he is batting at his preferred position, at the top of the order. In all T20s since 2018, Stoinis averages 51.56 as an opener with a strike rate of 132.88. He must be high on confidence after a breezy 38 and three wickets against the Sunrisers in Qualifier 2.
Kagiso Rabada: After a few rough games, Rabada got back among the wickets with a 4 for 29 against the Sunrisers on Sunday. He has a huge role to play against the strong Mumbai Indians batting line-up and we expect him to come good. He has picked up 29 wickets this season at an economy of 8.23 and a strike rate of 12.9, which is almost two wickets per game.
Differential Picks
R Ashwin: Ashwin has been a vital cog in this Capitals team. He invariably picks up a wicket every game without giving away many runs. He will be vital against the likes of Quinton de Kock in the powerplay. Ashwin has picked up seven wickets in the powerplay this season at an economy of 6.93 and a strike rate of 12.85. Overall, he has picked up 13 wickets at an economy of 7.72. The last time these two teams met, he picked up 3 for 29.
Trent Boult: Boult has picked up 22 wickets in the tournament so far at an economy of 8 and a strike rate of 14.5. No bowler has picked up more wickets than Boult (14) in the powerplay this season. In three games against the Capitals this season, Boult has picked up six wickets at an economy of 6.6.
Alternate Scenarios
  • Ishan Kishan is an alternate option for Sharma. Kishan has been in terrific form and had scored a fifty against the Capitals in their last meeting.
  • Shikhar Dhawan is an alternate captain choice especially if the Capitals bat first. When batting first, Dhawan has scored 408 runs including three fifties and a hundred at an average of 51 and a strike rate of 148.36.
  • Since 2018, Shreyas Iyer averages only 21.83 against the Mumbai Indians while Shimron Hetmyer has been in good form of late. So Hetmyer is an alternate option.
  • If Trent Boult is not fit, swap him with Kishan.
