New Zealand: Aberhart likely conference coach
From The Press
Successful Canterbury cricket coach Denis Aberhart is expected
to be named today as one of three coaches for the new conference
teams -- but not of his home southern region.
It is believed Aberhart will be appointed to the central region
comprising Wellington and Central Districts while Dunedin-based
Warren Lees will guide the southern region and Auckland's John
Bracewell the northern region.
Aberhart, who guided Canterbury to two Shell Trophy titles and
three Shell Cup championships in four seasons, appeared a
logical contender to take over the southern side comprising
players from the Canterbury and Otago region.
Lees was cast aside by New Zealand Cricket as its coach in 1993
after a controversial decision to return home from Sri Lanka
after a bomb went off near the players' hotel.
Conference cricket will feature a round-robin competition of
four-day and one-day matches (plus a final) during November and
December.
