The South Island levelled the three-match women's cricket series with the North Island 1-1 at Lincoln University.

The North Island was a comfortable winner of the first match on Saturday. The South fell 30 runs short in its chase for 238.

Yesterday the tables were turned with the South Island restricting the North to 206 from 50 overs in the chase for 214.

Debbie Hockley played a key role in the game. She scored 20 in the South's innings, and then bowled 10 overs for 46 runs.

North needed 12 runs off the last over to win but Hockley's wily slow bowling conceded only five runs. Katrina Withers boosted the South's total with a belligerent 54 not out.

North started well and Aroha Northover, 16, a student at Central Hawkes Bay College, kept the momentum going, with 43 from 46 balls, a commendable effort considering she had scored a first ball duck on Saturday.

Rebecca Rolls, with 32 from 38 balls also helped to keep the score moving, but the regular loss of wickets made North's task increasingly difficult.

The series decider will be played at Lincoln today.
