New Zealand could not have imagined that victory would arrive so comfortably when West Indies reached 180 for three in the 37th over. At that stage, it seemed that the West Indians had shuffled their batting order to profitable effect, but the game turned against them once Bravo chipped Styris to mid-wicket. Panic set in against some canny bowling, and they lost their last seven wickets for just 36 to finish at least 30 short of expectations, with 22 balls remaining. Lara, promoting himself to open, gave the innings a cracking start, only to succumb to a slower ball from Cairns. A similar delivery accounted for Sarwan, the only other man to reach fifty. West Indies proceeded to give away 30 in wides and no-balls, and could not tighten the screw after Fleming and Styris went in quick succession. Marshall, a natural strokemaker, went against type, hitting only three fours in his unbeaten 75, but it was just what New Zealand required.
