NEW DELHI, Jan 25 (AFP) - Pakistan on Monday called off a visit to India by their women's cricket team after Hindu militants dug up one of the pitches, the Press Trust of India said.
The news agency said the Pakistan Women's Cricket Association (PWCA) cited security worries for scrapping the tour of the northern state of Uttar Pradesh two days before the start of a three-nation women's tournament.
In a letter faxed to the organisers, PWCA president Shaiza Khan said the "responsibility and safety of the players has been given top priority before taking the decision," the agency reported.
The radical Shiv Sena Hindu party dug up the pitch last week at a stadium in the city of Muzaffarnagar, where the Pakistani women were to play the Indian women's national team.
The first match of the tournament - which also included Sri Lanka - was due to begin Wednesday in the state capital of Lucknow.
The Pakistan men's cricket team is currently visiting India despite similar threats by the Shiv Sena.
