KARACHI, April 1: Pakistan's 15-man World Cup squad would be
announced on Sunday, officials said.
Chairman of selectors Wasim Bari maintained on Thursday that his
committee had been assigned the task of submitting the team by March
31. "We have successfully met that deadline.
"However, the cricket board says that it would announce the team on
Sunday, the day Indian team is announced during the tri-nation series
final at Bangalore," Bari told Dawn.
According to the World Cup organizing committee rules, April 3 is the
deadline for submitting final squad. However, Pakistan along with
India have managed to take an extension by a day.
Bari, while refusing to discuss the team, said it was still upto the
PCB executive council to approve the side. "I don't know whether they
would approve the entire squad or would make any changes."
It is gathered that no top official of the Pakistan Cricket Board
(PCB) is in the country. Chairman Khalid Mahmood is touring with the
cricket team while Majid Khan on Thursday left for India as manager
of a Lahore-based Zaman club. The decision to withhold the team was
taken by the secretary of the board.
Bari admitted that the delay in the announcement of the team might
cause some confusion but stressed that it was the job of the cricket
board think tank. "My committee has done its work and from now the
cricket board comes into picture."
