Rixon, 52, is not overawed by the prospect of following in Buchanan's footsteps despite the seven years of world domination enjoyed by Australia. "I'd love to give it a go," he told AAP, "especially as we're coming into an era of team renewal, with new players coming through."
Although Rixon is the first person to publicly state his desire for the position, other potential candidates for the role include Tom Moody, the current Sri Lanka coach, Bennett King, West Indies coach, Greg Chappell, who is currently with India, and Tim Nielsen, the head coach at the Australian Centre of Excellence.
Rixon believes he would bring a wealth of experience to the job despite only representing Australia in 13 Tests. "I've been around the game for 30 years and I reckon I know what's going on in world cricket."
In his 10 years with New South Wales they won four Sheffield Shield and Pura Cup titles and six one-day trophies. He coached New Zealand between 1997 and 1999 and his county career with Surrey ran from 2004 to 2005.
"I'm a coach who likes to get his hands dirty, but I've learnt a lot about the managerial side of things."
