Peshawar, March 6: Speedster Shoaib Akhtar on Monday said he still
feeling pain in his groin and bowled flat out only after taking three
pain-killing injections.
"I had to take pain-killers because I was expected to deliver the
goods after Waqar Younis broke down with a back pain," Shoaib told
reporters after the close of play on the second day.
He said the wicket was not helpful and he had to bowl his heart
out. "I take pride in playing for Pakistan and I am prepared to give
my best in whatsoever condition I am.
Shoaib, who was banned from international cricket because of a
suspected bowling action, repeated that he was convinced that his
action was perfect.
"I had no pressure here. But I was under tremendous pressure at the
Gabba (in Australia)," he said. The fast bowler said his contract with
Nottinghamshire was extendible if he wanted. "Playing in England
would help me polish my skills and that would directly help the
Pakistan cricket team."
Intikhab Alam, the Pakistan coach, was delighted with the way Shoaib
bowled. He said during the lunch break, the bowler had been instructed
to fire all cylinders.
On Waqar Younis's injury, Intikhab said the 29-year-old pacer had some
back problem. He said Waqar underwent tests and ultra sound on Sunday
which turned out all clear.
"At the moment he is taking treatment and we are hoping that he would
be able to bowl in the second innings," Intikhab said. The former
captain said Pakistan would be trying not to bat again in this
Test. "For that we have to bat really well and take a substantial lead
over Sri Lanka.
"With the way the wicket is playing, I am confident that we would be
able to score more than 400 runs."
