LEICESTER - Sir Vivian Richards has taken over as coach of the West Indies team for the rest of the World Cup tournament.
His appointment was announced yesterday by West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) chief executive officer Steve Camacho.
The former West Indies captain will be replacing Malcolm Marshall who is recovering in a Birmingham hospital from abdominal surgery.
Sir Vivian met with West Indies manager Clive Lloyd, captain Brian Lara and vice-captain Jimmy Adams at the team's hotel here last night to finalise arrangements for his assignment.
Batting coach
The "Master Blaster" was already in England as a commentator with BBC television and radio.
The 47-year-old veteran of 121 Tests, rated as one of the best batsmen of all time, was first offered the role of batting coach for the World Cup. But he and the WICB could not reach agreement on terms.
Asked yesterday why he had refused the earlier offer, he said: "There are times when certain things need to be cleared."
Lloyd had been acting as stand-in coach since last Saturday.
West Indies have won their two matches this week, against New Zealand and Scotland.
"I think we are well-placed and Brian Lara is doing a good job. He is certainly in control now," Sir Vivian said.
