SRI LANKA SPORTS NEWS AT-A-GLANCE

* Mahamaya Girls College, Kandy emerged champions and carried
away the Kandy Mayors Cup at the Kandy District Girls Schools
limited over cricket tournament when they beat Wickremabahu
Madhya Maha Vidyalaya, Gampola by four wickets in the finals
played at Katugastota.
Mahamaya Girls College were led by Jayani Sapramadu who was
adjudged the `Woman of the Tournament' and were coached by
former Dharmaraja and Kandy schools captain and Lake House
sports journalist Upananda Jayasundera. What stunned the local
cricket fans was the shock victory Mahamaya scored over the
defending champions and favourites Swarnamali Balika Vidyalaya
in the semi-finals. With this win tucked under their belts,
Mahamaya's title quest was made easier. Swarnamali had to
contend with the third place when they defeated Gothami BV.
* The Dutch national ladies cricket team arrived in Colombo
today to play a series of matches against the Sri Lankan women's
cricket team which is preparing for next month's World Cup
tournament.
Sri Lanka has been drawn in group `B' along with New Zealand,
Canada, India, Netherlands and the West Indies for the 1997
Women's World cup cricket tournament to be worked off in India
next month.
The Group `A' comprise England, South Africa, Australia,
Ireland, Pakistan and Denmark. The preliminary round matches
will commence on December 10 where Sri Lanka will take on the
hosts India in Gauhati. On the same day, New Zealand will meet
Canada in New Delhi while West Indies take on Netherlands, also
in Delhi.
* St.Peter's College `B' recorded three good wins in their four
league matches against President's College Rajagiriya,
Dharmapala MV Pannipitiya, Sri Jayawardenapura MV and Zahira
College in the schools under 13 Horlicks trophy Division two
cricket tournament conducted by the Sri Lanka Schools Cricket
Association (SLSCA). The Peterite team is captained by Anuradh
Keppitiwalana.
* Three good half centuries by S.Pushpakumara (86), G.Bandara
(82) and C.Fernando (50) helped Narammala SC beat Dahanekagedera
SC by 113 runs in their BCCSL Division three cricket tournament
match played at Narammala. In reply to Narammala SC's 249 in
39.3 overs, Dahnekagedera SC were shot out for 137 in 36.1
overs.
* Cavaliers CC scored a 73-run victory over Kalpana CC in a
division III cricket match played at Malay grounds. Cavaliers
CC, taking the first lease, made 233 all out in 44 overs (L.
Wijeratne 37, C. Rajapakse 43, A. Senarath 37, S. Wickremasinghe
45 n.o., C. Rangana 2 for 32, M. Srihan 3 for 43).
In reply Kalpana CC made only 160 all out in 42.4 overs (M.
Srihan 49, M.S. Mahroof 21, B. Kudaliyage 20, L. Wijeratne 3 for
16, A. Seneviratne 3 for nought).
