Sandun Wasana progresses

Sandun 28 years of age a paraplegic was nominated by the ESCO rehabilitation council for the disabled in Sri Lanka based in Egodauyana.

He completed the 21.5 km half marathon in 59.04 seconds gaining 43rd place among 216 wheel chair competitors. Last year his position was 72 out of 220 participants. In view of the steady progress made by Sandun, ESCO has decided to nominate him for the 1998 participation as well. Cager 5-a-side

Eight teams in two groups will participate in the Sri Lanka Veterans Basketball Association's five-a-side tournament for the Scanwell Freight Express trophy at the Depot Police courts tomorrow and on Sunday.

The participating teams are: Group `A' Police BC, Rest, Air Lanka/Moratuwa, Overseas Reality SC; Group `B' Orients BC, Jade, Nugegoda Catholic Assoc, Bambalapitiya Catholic Assoc. Cricket Board Special General Meeting

Sri Lanka Cricket Board sources when contacted yesterday said they were awaiting confirmation from their lawyers Julius and Creasy in connection with the holding of a Special General Meeting in request to the appeal made by more than half its membership.

Shyanika de Silva playing excellent golf, beat Yvonne Abhayaratne with ease (6/5) to take the title in the jubilee year of the RCGC Ladies section tournament.

In the Bronze division, Mrs. C. M. Boo beat her counterpart Mrs. S. A. Jin 4/3 after a keenly contested match. The prize-giving was held at the RCGC hosted by the sponsor Lion Shipping Ltd. Metha Abeygunawardena and S.A.P.Samarasekera were elected president and secretary respectively at the annual general meeting of the Sri Lanka Society of Rugby Football Referees held at the CR and FC pavilion, Longden Place recently.

A cross-country race, organised by the Kotapola MPCS to improve the health activities of athletes was held at Morawaka recently.

About 350 athletes in Deniyaya electorate participated.

Windsurfing which was confined to beach hotels for the benefit of tourists is now accessible to all water sport loving people, from all walks of life, with the opening of Bolgoda Windsurf School on the banks of the Bolgoda Lake. The school is just 45 minutes drive from Colombo.

The windsurfer is made up of a sail and a epoxy fibreglass board which can speed on water up to 40 km per hour. One does not have to have a athletic build to do windsurfing. People from all walks of life engage in windsurfing and is very popular in places like Hawaii, Europe and Australia.

Mr. Shehan Aponso, President of the school, stressed that any person from 10-50 years can learn windsurfing in just eight hours and windsurf equipment is available for rental at nominal cost.
