Preparations for the World Twenty20 - to be hosted by Sri Lanka in September and October - began in earnest, but neither side could produce appetising cricket on a grudging pitch. Sri Lanka's top order struggled with the awkward angle and movement of Sohail Tanvir, who struck in each of his first three overs. They were 89 for seven by the 17th, but Umar Gul's last two went for 31, mostly to Perera. Pakistan started the reply as favourites, but their prospects nosedived in two balls: new Twenty20 captain Mohammad Hafeez and Shakeel Ansar - their second-oldest debutant in the format, at 33 years 203 days - were unable to get on top of cut shots, and picked out Dilshan at backward point. Ansar's golden duck capped a miserable debut: he had missed a chance to stump Thirimanne on eight. Sri Lanka conceded 17 in wides and were guilty of several misfields, but still fired Pakistan out for what was then their second-lowest Twenty20 total.
