South Africa v New Zealand, 2012-13

Wisden's review of the third ODI, South Africa v New Zealand, 2012-13

Neil Manthorp
15-Apr-2013
At Potchefstroom, January 25, 2013 (day/night). South Africa won by one wicket. Toss: New Zealand. One-day international debut: A. M. Phangiso.
McLaren became the sixth man to win a one-day international by hitting the last ball for six. With three needed off Franklin, he assessed his options and chose the one marked "maximum risk, maximum reward" - an audacious lap-sweep to a ball outside off stump, which cleared the fine-leg rope with room to spare. His bravura meant South Africa avoided the ignominy of a home whitewash. Local supporters had looked on in horror as, from 165 for two in the 34th over, their side threatened to repeat the choke of three days earlier. Smith appeared certain to bat through the chase, but tried to up the tempo and was caught at long-on after completing his tenth century in the format, and one of his best. McLaren lost Steyn to the penultimate ball of the match, but managed to sprint past him and regain the strike before the catch was taken. South Africa's improved bowling performance was undone by half-centuries from Munro, in his second one-day international, and Franklin, who helped gather 85 from the last ten overs.
Man of the Match: G. C. Smith.
