Injured Malinga out of Twenty20s against Australia

ESPNcricinfo staff

Lasith Malinga, the Sri Lanka fast bowler, has not been picked for the national team's two-match Twenty20 series against Australia, starting August 6 in Pallekele, due to an injury. Malinga was named in the list of 20 probables for the home series, but was left out of the Twenty20s to get back to fitness for the five-match ODI series starting on August 10. Sri Lanka have drafted in uncapped allrounder Shaminda Eranga while Angelo Mathews takes over as vice-captain following the axing of Thilina Kandamby.

Also missing from the 16-man squad is batsman Chamara Kapugedera, who was part of Sri Lanka's World Cup squad but wasn't picked for the limited-overs matches on the tour of England. Dhammika Prasad, Suranga Lakmal, Nuwan Kulasekara, Thisara Perera, Mathews and Eranga comprise the pace department . Ajantha Mendis, Rangana Herath and Suraj Randiv are the frontline spinners, and the hosts also have Jeevan Mendis as a spin option.

Making a return to the national team are offspinning allrounder Dilruwan Perera, who last played an international game in February 2008, and middle-order batsman Chamara Silva, who played in the World Cup. Tillakaratne Dilshan was named captain for the entire tour. The limited-overs series are followed by three Tests.

Sri Lanka squad: Tillakaratne Dilshan (capt), Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene, Dinesh Chandimal, Angelo Mathews (vice-capt), Jeevan Mendis, Dilruwan Perera, Thisara Perera, Dhammika Prasad, Suranga Lakmal, Ajantha Mendis, Nuwan Kulasekara, Suraj Randiv, Rangana Herath, Chamara Silva, Shaminda Eranga.

kapugedara, bhanuka,,sachith, janaka should have got the opportunities.dullep mendis is a blind bat.he should resign and allow a forward thinking selector to do the job

Kapudadar has too much talent. He is technically sound and have the skills to bat like Jaysooriya.Selectors should not waste his talent. He should be given every opportunity to bat in the TOP if they want to get his best. If we want to Plan for the next T20 and WC and he should promote to the top.We need more talent players. Also PERERA should bat in the TOP specially in T20. Next T20 WC is played in flat pitches so he a ideal player to go after bowlers during the power play. Dilshan, Perera & Kapugadar are ideal players to bat in the top in T20. Mathiew also should bat 4 or 5 in T20. Sag and Mahela should bat down the order in ODI if we want to build a good team for the next WC. Baduka also should be included in our ODI. He is a natural attacking player. Selectors should rotate players like IND. The best way to identified talent is to give players like Baduka & Kapugadar some test match experience so that they don't have to sacrifice their wicket.

Before the 1996 WC lot of ppl and the media had problems with KULU and Jay why they are in the team. Because Kalu ave was 11+ after 80-90 innings and Jay ave was 18+. Well the media and the ppl comments was irreverent because we had a grate leader Arajuna.Arajuna and our selectors knew their talent. It was just a matter of time to show why there are in the team. Kalu showed in AUS when our established openers struggled against quality bowlers on lively pitches KALU delivered. Had he bat in the TOP earlier on his carrier he should have won more games for us. Even the GRATE Aravinda's average was 34.9 in ODI which is far less for his talent.Who cares about the average, Aravinda was purely a entertainer and the one of the all time GRATES. Aravindas talent was the key not his stats . The ppl who have problems and never played any sports have to wait because whether you like it or not talented KAPUGADARA will play for SL and will be a key player in our batting.

@Diyan82 . Do you know how to read stats? Kapugadar did not bat 87 innings only played 72 innings and 7no.Which mean (72-7) =65 innings, 7 innings he couldn't continue when he scored 40+ and 50+. Also he has only played 8 tests and already have 4 fifties and his last tour he score 96. He never got enough opportunities to bat against weak sides 50% of the time he came to sacrifice his wicket because he had to bat last 5 to 6 overs and when he got opportunities to bat on the top on top we were 60/5 or 80/4 and he was under lot of pressure and we did not see his natural game. Kapu is not a player who capable to score 30+ scores he already scored 7 ODI fifties but to his standard its low but I am sure he will improved if he given opportunities to bat on the top. What SL need is talented players not stats players . Stats you can make it when you are playing against weak teams like Kenya,Zim, Bag, Canada, NZ & WI etc. Also do you know why KALU open for SL?? his ave was 11+ when he open???

On the subject of Kapugedara : Talent doesn't count - Performance counts! Such a useless cricketer and I think he should be awarded a medal from ICC for the most useless cricketer in our era......

Dear selectors why again chamara silva,v had given many chances to him, ydont we get in banuka rajapakse n make angelo as the captain.

  • Samapth on August 1, 2011, 16:58 GMT

Dear Selectors, you are always showing the majic.Last England tour appointed kandamby as vice captan. He was removed and Chamara Silva in. I guess next chance will be Jehan Mubaraks.Sepectators.... do not surprise if Chamara silva replace Dinesh Chandimal in Final elevn.Please...Please...Indentify the players who are no more match up with International cricket.Consider the young performers like Banuka Rajapakse, Lahiru Thirimanne,Dilshan Munaweera,Sachitra Serasinghe,Sachith Pathirana and chatura Peris for selection. If not ,please give a chance to unfortunte category of Sri Lanka Cricket 'Jeewantha Kulathunga,Indika De Seram and Janak Gunarathne".Hats off for appointing Mr cool Angelo as VC and give the chance to young talented shaminda Eranga

@diyan82- i agree with most things you say, except, the pressure is not the same irrespective of where you bat, as an opening batsmen, it is far harder to face the best bowlers and the new ball compared to someone coming in at eight facing an old ball and tired bowlers...

Well said @Githika….. @carvin how can you seriously go on about a couple of 30's he got ages ago……These dream innings as you describe have been one off's. Getting 20-30 runs once in blue moon isn't good enough. Are you really naive enough to think so? "3 six's when he was 18" so what's the big deal? I'm pretty sure you know he is well over 18 now and yet to get some proper runs on the board. I've come to the conclusion you know Kapugedera in a personal level which is why you seem to ignore all the fact that are staring right at you. You can be loyal to him all you want, but the SL team can do without kapugedara, he isn't as important to the team as you make him out to be.
