Darren Pattinson bowled his first over on the opening day
at Trent Bridge at around 11.05 am and also bowled the final over at around 6.30 pm. During that time 20 wickets tumbled as Pattinson ripped Lancashire apart with a career-best 6 for 30 before Nottinghamshire were removed for 202. It was the second time in two matches that Lancashire had been involved in such a day, following their game against Durham last week. Pattinson took a five-wicket haul on his county debut in the opening match of the season against Kent, but had to move aside while Ryan Sidebottom and Stuart Broad were available. With those two on England duty, Pattinson had another chance and responded in destructive fashion. Lancashire's top order - missing Mohammad Yousuf who has had some minor visa issues - slumped to 16 for 4, and later the last six wickets went for 12. In between Stuart Law (55) and Steven Croft began a recovery but Mark Ealham started the second collapse by having Croft caught by Graeme Swann. Wickets continued to fall as Nottinghamshire slipped to 43 for 3. Samit Patel produced the best innings of the day, adding 93 with Mark Wagh (55), and Patel's 74 off 71 balls took his team into the lead before Gary Keedy - the first spiner of the match - grabbed two quick wickets. Croft then swiftly wrapped up the innings with his medium-pace, although the lead of 89 is useful on a lively surface. The pitch inspectors are on their way for the start of the second day.
Chris Tremlett continued the promising form he showed for England Lions last week with five wickets as Hampshire had a productive first day against Surrey at The Rose Bowl. He removed Jon Batty for a duck and returned to have Scott Newman bowled via an inside edge when he appeared set. Mark Ramprakash, searching for his 100th hundred, was caught behind for 17 as plenty of Surrey batsmen made starts without capitalising. Mark Butcher, well caught by Sean Ervine at midwicket, and Usman Afzaal fell in the forties despite being dropped three times between them. Matthew Nicholson's 40 gave the total some respectability and the day ended on a positive note for Surrey when Jimmy Ormond removed Michael Carberry in his first over.
The Somerset top order enjoyed the conditions at Taunton and Sussex endured a tough day in the field. James Hildreth scored his first Championship century of the season as the visitors were made to toil in typically batsman-friendly conditions. Chris Adams put Somerset in, perhaps swayed by last week's match when Somerset were 23 for 6 against Hampshire. Neil Edwards was within touching distance of his own century but, having advanced out of the crease against Ollie Rayner, was run out for 99 by some swift work from Chris Adams at slip. Marcus Trescothick hit 74 with 11 boundaries before becoming Corey Collymore's first Championship wicket.

Di Venuto dominates Yorkshire

Michael Di Venuto, for once avoiding the fate of being run out, held together Durham's fragile first innings against Yorkshire

Michael Di Venuto, for once avoiding the fate of being run out, held together Durham's fragile first innings against Yorkshire. He had little support from his partners, none of whom reached 30, and was still there with 184 to his account at the close, made from a total of 337 for 6. This was his day, and he still has tomorrow ahead of him.
Yet he could have departed to the first ball of the match. Bowled by Darren Gough, it went right through him to the keeper and might so easily have taken the edge of the bat. Gough defied suggestions that he was at the end of the line after a bad match at home against Nottinghamshire two weeks ago, and put in a fine but luckless spell with the new ball. At the other end Dion Kruis swung the ball considerably, but too often down the leg side to the two Durham left-handers.
Both Di Venuto and Mark Stoneman had some near misses, but to their credit they hung in and made sure of giving Durham a sound start. The seamer Ben Sanderson was making his first-class debut for Yorkshire, with Matthew Hoggard being kept as security in the England team until making his way north during the afternoon, after some excellent second-team performances, and moved the ball a little without really looking threatening. The opening stand reached 96 until, not long before lunch, Stoneman (27) edged Tim Bresnan to third slip.

Sizzling Jayasuriya pounds Chennai

Sachin Tendulkar's return dominated most of the pre-match buzz but it was the eruption from Sanath Jayasuriya that Mumbai toasted at the end of a comfortable nine-wicket win, their fourth in a row, at the Wankhede Stadium

Sachin Tendulkar's return dominated most of the pre-match buzz but it was the eruption from Sanath Jayasuriya that Mumbai toasted at the end of a comfortable nine-wicket win, their fourth in a row, at the Wankhede Stadium. Chennai appeared to have cobbled together a fighting total, in conditions that assisted swing bowling, but Jayasuriya's sizzler, the second-fastest IPL hundred that was punctuated with 11 sixes, put an emphatic end to the contest.
Mumbai's bowlers set-up this win with a fine new-ball exhibition that knocked off the top order. Shaun Pollock wasn't leading Mumbai today but his immaculate early spell (4-1-9-1) led an impressive effort that justified their decision to field first. Mahendra Singh Dhoni and S Badrinath stitched together a 95-run stand but 156 was never going to be challenging if even one batsman got going.

South Africans put Leicestershire on top

It was a like a United Nations conference at Grace Road, with no fewer than 13 overseas-born players representing Leicestershire and Northamptonshire

It was a like a United Nations conference at Grace Road, with no fewer than 13 overseas-born players representing Leicestershire and Northamptonshire. The home side's foreign stars took the honours, with Boeta Dippenaar - the official overseas player, and one of nine South Africans in the match - leading the way with 80.
Dippenaar added 109 for the third wicket with HD Ackerman - four Tests and a long-term Kolpak - as Leicestershire built solidly throughout the day. However, both Ackerman and Dippenaar missed out on centuries that were there for the taking and Ackerman's dismissal was a truly South African affair: caught Andrew Hall, bowled Nicky Boje.
Dippenaar got closer to his hundred, striking 14 boundaries, before he was bowled off an inside edge by Lance Klusener but Northamptonshire couldn't take wickets in clusters.

Shoaib Akhtar made a dramatic IPL debut, taking four wickets in a blistering new-ball spell to consign the Delhi Daredevils to their fourth straight defeat. In a match crucial to the scramble for a semi-final place, the Kolkata Knight Riders overcame a batting failure, posting only 133, thanks to Shoaib and an inspired fielding effort. They eventually vindicated captain Sourav Ganguly's decision to bat first, pulling off a 23-run win for their third successive triumph.
Kolkata went in to field defending a small total and needing a huge performance from their debutant. Shoaib had played only one match in the last five months but showed no sign of rust as he removed the dangerous Virender Sehwag for a golden duck in the first over. There was a hint of outswing and Sehwag's footwork-free waft edged the ball behind to Wriddhiman Saha.

Marsh leads nine-wicket mauling

A nine-wicket mauling in Mohali leaves the Bangalore Royal Challengers all but out of the semi-finals

The troubles don't seem to abate for the Bangalore Royal Challengers; off-field controversies plagued the bottom-placed side going into the match against Kings XI Punjab, and a nine-wicket mauling in Mohali leaves the second-most expensive franchise in the IPL all but out of the semi-finals.
On a hard deck suited for strokeplay, Bangalore's batsmen once again failed to fire, and after they were restricted to 143, the chase was a mere formality. Shaun Marsh, though, didn't show any mercy on a hapless opposition, and his unbeaten 74 completed an emphatic nine-wicket win, pushing his team to second place .

Jones five sparks Worcestershire

Simon Jones claimed 5 for 32 as Worcestershire crushed Hampshire by nine wickets at New Road, his best figures in any cricket since the 6 for 53 he took in the third Test against Australia in August 2005, and by far the best of his one-day career. He has barely been on a cricket field since and this was his most convincing performance for his new county in a season that has already been disrupted by a neck injury. He was chiefly responsible for Hampshire's last five wickets falling for 20 and removed top-scorer Greg Lamb for 84. Vikram Solanki (81) and Steven Davies (76 not out) then made mincemeat of a weak bowling attack with an opening stand of 160 in 19 overs. Moeen Ali added his own range of powerful blows in a 35-ball 42 as the rout was completed with more than 22 overs to spare.
If Craig Spearman's career had panned out differently he could still be lining up to play for New Zealand against England, but that part of his life is a long way behind him now. He again showed his one-day pedigree with an unbeaten 140 off 119 balls to carry Gloucestershire through an impressive run chase against Somerset in Bristol. Set a stiff 291, they were in trouble at 159 for 6 but Spearman found support from Stephen Adshead as the pair added a match-winning 135. Such was the quality of their partnership that the win came with a comfortable 10 balls to spare. Justin Langer scored a fine hundred himself, 112 off 118 deliveries, and formed his own important lower-order stand of 113 with Peter Trego (56 off 38 balls). However, he was trumped by another special from Spearman.

du Plessis carries Lancashire home

For the second successive Sunday, Lancashire hosted and won a one-day thriller, though this time they did not leave it to the final ball, as Francois du Plessis, their Kolpak South African, hit 77 off 80 balls

For the second successive Sunday, Lancashire hosted and won a one-day thriller, though this time they did not leave it to the final ball, as Francois du Plessis, their Kolpak South African, hit 77 off 80 balls. A big penultimate over that brought 17 runs turned a nail-biter into a surprisingly comfortable ending, and the three-wicket victory kept them on top of the North Division.
Lancashire began their chase with a bang, though helped by a low chance offered by Gareth Cross but missed at first slip in Tim Bresnan's first over. A superb catch by Adam Lyth at square leg off a powerful pull by Mal Loye (15) brought Yorskhire their first wicket; 33 for 1. Bresnan then bowled a wide, and the next ball had Stuart Law flashing and being caught at the wicket without scoring.
The match had turned when Lancashire slipped to 46 for 4, Darren Gough taking two wickets, at which point Cross started to open up. But he was bowled for 41 by David Wainwright; 76 for 5 in the 22nd over, and Lancashire were now in serious danger of heavy defeat.

Team Mat Won Lost

Aaron Redmond made 64 in the second innings to follow up his 146 earlier in the match against England Lions © Getty Images

Aaron Redmond completed an impressive build-up to the first Test against England with 64 to go alongside his first-innings 146 as the New Zealanders secured a draw against England Lions at The Rose Bowl. Redmond added 150 with Jamie How before Adil Rashid caused a brief flutter with three quick wickets.
Robert Key declared to leave a target of 368 off 75 overs, but that was never really in the equation. Unlike in the first innings the Lions attack couldn't make any inroads with the new ball as Matthew Hoggard went wicketless in a six-over spell the day he was recalled to the England squad.
Redmond and How made steady progress on an easy-paced pitch and the Lions quickly turned to the spin pair of Rashid and Graeme Swann. How's 74 was an important innings after a duck in the first innings and two single-figure scores against Essex last week. Redmond, however, is striking form at just the right time with New Zealand's top order set for a testing time at Lord's.

Watson seals tense win for Rajasthan

Shane Watson first used the uneven bounce of the Jaipur pitch to keep the Delhi Daredevils in check, then batted as if it didn't exist to bludgeon 74 off 40 balls and maintain the Rajasthan Royals' 100% record at home

Shane Watson first used the uneven bounce of the Jaipur pitch to keep the Delhi Daredevils in check, then batted as if it didn't exist to bludgeon 74 off 40 balls and maintain the Rajasthan Royals' 100% record at home. The win, based once again on Shane Warne's strategy of winning the toss, inserting the opposition and restricting them to a gettable total, keeps Rajasthan at the top of the points table and pushes Delhi down to fifth place.
Though Delhi fought hard to defend their total, the match was more or less decided in the first innings when Rajasthan's bowlers checked the run-scoring to the extent that the first six came in the 18th over. Watson was the first to inject doubt and uneasiness in the Delhi openers' minds when he used the short ball to repeatedly beat their bats. Gautam Gambhir leaned out to reach for one that lifted from back of a length and swished wildly in the air, Virender Sehwag's attempted pull off another narrowly missed the edge.
Watson's first spell, where he went for 15 off three overs, was followed by more miserly bowling in the middle overs. Munaf Patel varied his length and bowled to his field to choke the runs; Siddharth Trivedi managed to get movement off the seam and troubled Gambhir before knocking over his off stump. Dimitri Mascarenhas, who went for 12 runs in his first over, came back in his second spell to get the wickets of AB de Villiers and Dinesh Karthik in the same over. He finished with figures of 4-0-29-2 in his only IPL match this season and completely justified his selection.
