The Australia A captain Ed Cowan continued his productive tour of England, leading a strong reply from the visitors after the allrounder Chris Woakes scored 92 to push England Lions to 315 on the second day at Old Trafford. Mitchell Johsnon picked up 4 for 47 in an encouraging, controlled display, and at stumps Australia A were 127 for 1 in their reply, with Cowan on 77 and Michael Klinger on 36.
The only wicket claimed by the Lions was that of the Western Australian opener Liam Davis, who was lbw to Stuart Meaker for 4, before Cowan and Klinger built their unbeaten 111-run partnership. Cowan brought up his half-century from 80 balls and finished the day within sight of his second century of the tour, and Klinger started slowly before launching the spinner Simon Kerrigan for a pair of sixes straight down the ground.
It was a strong reply from the Australians after they were frustrated by Woakes, who came to the crease at 142 for 5. Woakes was keen to prove his Test credentials, having played for England in one-day and T20 cricket last year, and he put together two half-century stands, first with Samit Patel, who made 55, and then with the No.10, Meaker, who scored 22.
Woakes was impressive down the ground and fell just short of what could have been his third first-class hundred of the year when he was caught at mid-off from the bowling of Johnson, the final wicket to fall in the innings. It was a promising bowling display from Johnson, who was playing just his second first-class match since Australia's tour of South Africa last November due to a long injury lay-off.
Earlier, he had bowled James Tredwell to add to the two wickets he picked up on the first day, while the Tasmania fast bowler Jackson Bird collected two wickets, Patel caught at slip and James Harris lbw. The Victoria left-arm spinner Jon Holland started the day well, having Craig Kieswetter lbw for 16, but it was his only success of the day.
