Warwickshire took the edge over Worcestershire on day one at Edgbaston
in the Second Divison thanks to South African Allan Donald's burst of
4 for 69. Worcestershire were all out for 263 in 89 overs after being
151 for 2.
Worcestershire without their captain Graeme Hick, won the toss and the
decision of acting captain Steve Rhodes to bat first seened to be an
advantage as the openers Philip Weston (23) and Elliott Wilson (34)
put on 51 runs, their first half century partnership in six matches.
Later Worcestershire were 182 for 5 despite valuable contributions
from Vikram Solanki (71) and David Leatherdale (42).
The two wicketkeepers Steve Rhodes (39 not out) and Jamie Pipe (30) in
a new role as a specialist batsman put on 44 runs before Pipe got out
to Neil Smith wihtout utilisng the two chances that Warwickshire had
let off. Neil Smith finished with figures of 3 for 51.
In reply, Warwickshire responded with 28 for no loss in 13 overs when
play ended for the day.
