smashed through extra cover, Phoenix win by three wickets! Dawson kicks the turf, Spirit fought all the way but go down with one ball to spare for a second consecutive defeat
Spirit vs Phoenix, 5th Match at London, Men's Hundred, Jul 27 2024 - Ball by Ball Commentary
Phoenix won by 3 wickets (with 1 ball remaining)
9.35pm: Squeaky bum time, but Birmingham Phoenix prevail! Finally, the men's Hundred gets a close finish, though it was an undistinguished scuffle for much of the 200 balls. Spirit showed spirit to recover from 30 for 5 and then reduce Phoenix to 20 for 4 in their chase, but Dan Mousley and Jacob Bethell rebuilt the innings and Benny Howell was there to get them over the line
Sean Abbott is the Match Hero: "Feedback was it was doing a bit, present the seam and hit the top of off. Got a couple of early wickets. Not going for runs is the most important bit. All the games have the opportunity to get tight at the end. First two games have favoured bowlers. Tonight it moved around a bit and both teams bowled well. Six games to go, I'm sure we'll be challenged. It wasn't the easiest wicket but the two young blokes batted well to get us close to home."
Okay, folks, that's yer lot. We'll be back for more tomorrow, with day three of the Test at Edgbaston and Welsh Fire vs Oval Invincibles as the Hundred heads to Cardiff. See ya!
The field comes in, everyone saving one
goes for the big wind-up, top-edged over the leaping backward point! And they hustle for two as Worrall underarms the ball in after giving chase
Howell on strike now, three from three
tight on the stumps, backs away and slaps past Lawrence in the covers. Just one this time
Four off four now
length ball, Abbott is out and chops into the ground and over cover, into the gap for two
Looks like Dawson is going to bowl all 10 here
flighted, Abbott is across looking to slog-sweep, hit on the pads. Muted appeal for lbw... and after quite some time, Lawrence reviews. Looked to be going well down leg, but let's see. Yep, clearly missing
zipped down and straightening, just misses leg stump! Pressure mounting
pushed through on the stumps, chopped to point. Dot
Sean Abbott is in. Can the hero with the ball finish it off?
Fuller jumps down and holes out! Looking to get the job done but he underclubs it and Stone takes a good low catch running in from long-off. Phoenix can't mess this up, can they?
tossed up from round the wicket, Howell honks it to deep point on the bounce
So, we get to the final change of ends. The Butterkist Brummies need seven from 10 balls
dug in short, Fuller ducks... and takes it flush on the back! Not far from looping up and hitting the stumps on its way through, too
Now Spirit miss the cut-off, so will have to bring a man into the ring
back of a length, guided behind point - this time Russell flings himself to his right and prevents a boundary! Brilliant work
Phoenix two hits away
pace off, slices past short third! A thick outside edge but it beats Russell and trundles away to the rope
wide blockhole, squeezed out through point
full on the stumps, smoked back down the ground! Superbly well timed by Fuller, long-on was back but couldn't cut it off
Ellis for his final set
"Is this going to be the first close match for the men's tournament in this season?" We're heading that way, Dirk. But don't jinx it
dragged down and Howell makes room to batter through cover for one
shuffles across outside off, swatted to long-on
Phoenix lose another, James Fuller next in
Bethell reverses... straight to cover! No sense he wanted to knock it around, goes for the boundary option but doesn't catch it right, comes off the toe of the bat and Lawrence, in slightly awkward fashion, takes a crocodile catch stumbling to his right
looped up across the left-hander, Bethell bunts through mid-off and they'll come back for two
tossed up from round the wicket, Howell skips forward and works to leg
Lawrence now turns to Liam Dawson, with 22 needed off 20
full with pace off, nudged leg side for one
