Australia's selection juggles and Lyon's full circle

The changes
Twenty20 internationals at the end of the home summer always seem to get Australia's selectors moving. No fewer than six changes were called for the hosts at the MCG, including three debuts - John Hastings, Nathan Lyon and Scott Boland. Steven Smith and David Warner were rested in lieu of their Saturday departure for New Zealand, while Travis Head, Shaun Tait, Kane Richardson and Cameron Boyce were left to cool their heels and wonder whether they have done enough to earn World T20 selection. The last time Australia made six changes was for another late season T20, against the West Indies in 2013 ahead of the fateful Test tour of India.

The full circle

Lyon's call-up finally gave him the full set of Test, ODI and T20 caps, some five years after his international debut against Sri Lanka in Galle in 2011. The irony in Lyon waiting longest of all for a T20 opportunity was hard to ignore, since he first made his name as a T20 bowler for South Australia in the last season before the introduction of the Big Bash League. Lyon had taken a wicket with his first ball in Tests, and conceded a miserly two from his first ODI over in the Caribbean. But this time he was quickly set upon by Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma, over No. 1 costing 15.

The desperation

Those who saw some of India's more desultory fielding at times during the ODI series may have been surprised to see the evident desperation at the start of Australia's chase. Virat Kohli put in a full length dive at mid off to save three runs from a Shaun Marsh straight drive. Hardik Pandya went one better with a superb chase, dive and save to prevent another Marsh boundary at long on. but Kohli had another moment's agility in store, throwing himself to back up successfully after a shy at the stumps following an Australian quick single.

The trio

India's introduction of spin had brought Australia undone in Adelaide, and this time there was no shortage of eventfulness about the early overs shared by R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja. Dhoni missed a stumping off Marsh in Jadeja's first over, before Umesh Yadav parried a six-bound finch shot over the midwicket fence while making a bold attempt to catch in Jadeja's next. But the standout sequence was in Ashwin's second, when Finch was dropped by the two Dhawans in consecutive balls, before two balls later Marsh was pouched at long on.
