WITH A new board in place, president of the Barbados Cricket
Association (BCA) Tony Marshall is looking ahead to his next term in
office and hoping to motivate the board in the best interests of
cricket.
I am sure that everything is going to be well, he said on Voice Of
Barbados yesterday, though he declined to be interviewed by
WEEKENDSPORT.
The comments or criticisms made, I will not attempt to say that they
were right or wrong. What I am going to do is look to the future but I
am pretty sure given the new blood that we are going to be able to put
our heads together and make sure that the BCA rides on top of the
waves as it has always done.
Marshall was responding to comments that members of the board and BCA
made about his leadership style but he is going to put all of that
aside.
We are going to bury all of it. Much of it, I think, has been a bit
harsh. I dont feel that we deserved as much as we have gotten but we
are not going to look at that. We have a long road to travel.
Newly elected first vice-president Keith Simmons is hopeful that the
fences can be mended and he is throwing his support behind Marshall.
I sincerely hope that the so-called fractures can be mended ..., and I
shall support the president and the members of the board.
Whatever the president asks me to do I will try to do to the best of
my ability, said the former Minister of Justice.
However, Jeff Broomes, who was narrowly defeated by Simmons, is not so
sure that it will be a bed of roses. Responding to whether he thinks
the style of the president will change, Broomes said: I dont think so.
I think the president has probably been this type of person all his
working life. He is a very, very successful business person. I hope
that the new board gets him to involve them bit more.
Broomes did not contest any other office after his defeat, stating
that the membership had spoken.
In spite of the criticisms of Marshall, no one came forward to oppose
him at the BCAs AGM at the Sherbourne Centre.
History was made when Patricia Greenidge was elected to succeed Vernon
Williams as treasurer, the first woman to serve on the board of the
BCA.
I know it is going to be a challenge, said Greenidge, assistant
vice-president of investments at The Mutual. Throughout my life I have
had a lot of challenges and I do like a challenge, actually, so I am
kind of looking forward to it.
