With an eye to the future, the Victorian selectors have appointed exciting 20 year-old Cameron White as captain of the Bushrangers ING Cup team for season 2003/2004.

The decision was ratified by the Cricket Victoria Board at Monday night's monthly meeting after a recommendation from the four man selection panel.

White, becomes the youngest player to captain his state in Victoria's 152 year history. Coach David Hookes, who himself captained his state at a young age, believes White has all the characteristics of a successful leader.

"Cameron White has shown at a young age a successful understanding of captaining a team," Hookes said. "Part of his ability is his knowledge of cricket, particularly the one-day format, and I believe he will grow into the job as he develops his on-field batting and bowling skills," he added.

The appointment is another step in a remarkable playing resume. Originally from Bairnsdale, 300km east of the Bushrangers base, White has led the state at both under-17 and under-19 level and was a member of the Australian under-19 team that played a Youth Series against Sri Lanka in 2001.

The then 17-year-old debuted for the Bushrangers late in the 2000/2001 Pura Cup season and impressed with his all round ability together with his poise and maturity.

Most compelling in support of the Victorian selectors' decision, is the report card on Cameron White's captaincy during Australia's U19 Youth World Cup campaign in 2002. He is said to of led with flair, control and maturity far beyond his years and was instrumental in Australia going through undefeated in capturing yet another World Cup.

White said he was looking forward to the challenges of captaining his state and expects to receive terrific support from his more experienced team-mates. "It's a tremendous honour to be named captain of your state. Whilst it was a little unexpected I'm really looking forward to the role and growing my leadership skills to ensure the Bushrangers are a strong force in the ING Cup competition this season and in the future."

He added "To captain a side that contains guys like Elliott, Hodge and Berry is a pretty good feeling. I know that they will assist and support me along the way and I will welcome their input."

The Bushrangers ING Cup campaign begins against New South Wales at Bowral on October 26.
