Darren Broom has followed his older brother Neil to Otago after failing to win a contract with Canterbury for the coming season. Broom, 24, has played three one-day games and one Twenty20 match for Canterbury but hopes there will be greater opportunities with Otago.

"I would love to have stayed here and played my cricket for Canterbury," Broom told the Press. "All my mates are here, this is where I've learnt the game and it is certainly not a decision I've taken lightly.

"But I can't command a place in the Canterbury team and they look to have a pretty stacked side this year. There might be a few more chances in Otago, that's the way I'm looking at it. I want to make it in first-class cricket and higher honours if possible."
