India's five-match one-day series against Sri Lanka has been postponed. The series was scheduled to be held in India after the current tour by Pakistan, but the Fixtures Committee, which met in Mumbai today, decided to put it off.
Explaining the decision, Gautam Dasgupta, the joint secretary of the BCCI, said: "In view of the inability of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) to confirm the itinerary and the recent developments in the SLC administration, the committee felt that the matches should be postponed to a mutually convenient date for both the BCCI and the SLC."
The Sri Lankan board and the government of the country have been locked in a controversial battle to wrest control of the game. The sports minister suspended the board for improper financial management, but the board members went ahead with their annual general meeting in defiance of the government's order, and later locked up the SLC headquarters so that government-appointed officials could not access the office. Amid such confusion, the Indian board thought it best to postpone the series to a later date, by which time the crisis in Sri Lankan cricket would have been resolved.
