Live Report - GT win in a chaotic, last-ball finish

By Sidharth Monga

The roll of dice falls GT's way

This was absolute lottery by the end. GT had a lot of luck on the night. They will hope they haven't exhausted their share of luck for the tournament. We leave you with a teaser from our final report.
In a chaotic match laced with rain breaks during the second half, Gujarat Titans got home by the barest of margins to reach the top of the points table and end Mumbai Indians’ six-match winning streak. When it started to rain just before midnight, MI would have thought they had fashioned an improbable comeback. Between two rain breaks, they had taken 4 for 25 to turn GT’s lead of eight on the DLS par score to a deficit of four with two overs to go.
Thanks to some excellent work from the ground staff, the game resumed at the last possible moment, leaving GT 15 to get in the 19th over. Deepak Chahar was hit for a four and a six in the first three balls, then bowled a no-ball, but came back to take a wicket. With one needed off the last ball, MI could still have forced a tie had someone come around to collect the throw from mid-off. Hardik Pandya, who had bowled two no-balls earlier and had decided against bowling the last over, missed with the direct-hit, sparking wild celebrations in the GT camp.

GT get home in a game they almost lost

This game was done when the final rain happened, but full credit to the groundstaff and the umpires to get us back on. Amid chaotic scenes, GT get home by the skin of their teeth. Poor backing up by Suryakumar Yadav on the last ball. Had he come around to collect the throw, we would have had a Super Over.

It's official: one over, 15 to get

It has been confirmed. The ground staff and the match officials have done a great job. We will have one over at 12.30am. If GT score 15, they win. If GT score 14, we have a super over. If GT score 13, MI win.
It looks like Deepak Chahar will bowl the over. And an over-rate penalty has been imposed on MI. They can have only four men outside the 30-yard circle.

Still waiting

It 12.22am, and we are still waiting. They are trying to get the ground ready. Almost certain we can't get the full 20 overs. At best we can get only one over in. GT will hope that we can get one over started in eight minutes from now.

Latest possible start: 12.30am with 15 to get

Apologies for earlier confusion. This is the latest we have got. The latest we can start a 19-over game is at 12.30am. If we do get an over in, GT will need 15 to win.

Ashwani 4-0-28-2, rain is back with MI ahead

He was not even part of the plans until Prasidh Krishna hit Corbin Bosch on the back of the head in the 20th over of MI's innings. Bosch wass concussed, Ashwani came on and has taken the key wicket of Jos Buttler and Rashid Khan's. He has also bowled four overs for just 28 runs.
And the rain has come back, covers come back on, and GT are four behind the par score.
The match has to be finished by 12.25am. So the latest we can resume for a 19-over game is 12.21am.

Ashwani yorks out Rashid: 30 needed off 16

Rashid Khan likes to stay deep in the crease, and Ashwani Kumar, the concussion sub, uses that to slip in a really full delivery. Another batter might have taken this on the full. Rashid is beaten under the toe of the bat. Not given on the field, but they review. Pitched marginally within the line of the stumps.
Gerald Coetzee quite fancies himself as a batter. Now might be the time to prove it.
3
3

Bumrah 4-0-19-2: 31 needed off 18

GT can breathe a sigh of relief now that Bumrah's excellent night is done. He can play no more part in this game except field. Rahul Tewatia and Rashid Khan have to get 31 off three overs. Ashwani Kumar is bowling one, which means Deepak Chahar won't bowl out.
1
2

Bumrah gets Shahrukh: 33 needed off 26

Two balls after playing a lovely cover-driven four off a Jasprit Bumrah half-volley, Shahrukh Khan plays all across a straight length ball and is bowled. You knew it was Bumrah or nothing for MI, and he has brought them right back into the contest.
Bumrah is getting seam movement off such an old ball.
4

GT meet their fears

1 This is the first time this IPL that none of the GT top three has scored a fifty. Also the first time they have been dismissed inside 15 overs.
1
1
2

Boult 4-0-22-2: 38 needed off 24

Trent Boult is done. He has bowled four superb overs for just 22 runs and the wickets of B Sai Sudharsan and Sherfane Rutherford. Now MI have one over from Bumrah, and two from Chahar left. GT have Rashid Khan and then the bowlers.
1

Boult gets Rutherford: 41 needed off 27

Jasprit Bumrah got Shubman Gill, and now Trent Boult has got the big wicket of Sherfane Rutherford. Skiddy length ball, Rutherford plays around it, trapped on the crease. MI have come roaring back into the match.
3

Bumrah gets Gill: 43 needed off 31

Jasprit Bumrah is the only man standing between GT and a win, and he has struck in the first over after rain. Still gets seam movement from a good length to go through Shubman Gill. He is gone for 43 off 46. Might it be a good wicket for GT?
In comes Shahrukh Khan.
2

Rain stops: 49 needed off 36

The rain has stopped, we will resume in abut eight minutes. No overs lost. That leaves us with six overs. GT need 49 to win. Bumrah has two left, Boult one, and Chahar two.
3

2

Raining again: 107 for 2 in 14

Rutherford has made sure GT are ahead of not just the contest but also the par score of 99 for 2 in 14 overs. Even absent the rain, his little gem of 26 off 12 has turned the game around. This time there is little wind around so they have called the covers on even as they call the second time-out.
Two overs ago, GT were five behind the par score. In two overs, they are eight ahead, all thanks to Rutherford.
4
3

Rutherford beats the match-up: 94 for 2 in 13

MI see Sherfane Rutherford, and throw the ball to Will Jacks immediately. It seems to be working with three dots first up. Then comes a wide, then an inside edge for four, and then tow lovely inside-out shots for four and six. Lovely batting.
6
4

Concussion sub Ashwani gets Buttler: 78 for 2 in 11.3

The rain has stopped, and Ashwani Kumar, the left-arm quick brought on to replace the concussed Corbin Bosch, has managed to get rid of Jos Buttler for 30 off 27.
That one ball after Tilak Varma dropped Shubman Gill. MI will believe they have got the bigger wicket as Gill is struggling on 36 off 39 despite getting two free hits.
Sherfane Rutherford is the Impact Player, and the new batter in.
1

Raining again: 68 for 1 in 10

The umpires have been consistent in keeping the players on. This quick shower in the 10th over is the hardest yet. This time GT were ahead of the par score.

GT up and running: 58 for 1 in 8

That's the eighth over, bowled by Hardik Pandya.
The funny thing about DLS is that till about 6-7 overs, stopping the game was good for MI, suggesting they were ahead of the game, but we all knew that with more play, GT were the favourites. They have scored 37 in the last three to be back on track.
1
1

The rain is back: 29 for 1 in 6 overs

Good on the umpires to continue through the rain even when it happened during the third and now during the sixth over. GT are 29 for 1 after six, which leaves them 11 short of the par score. So if it continues raining and we don't get any more play, MI win.
And MI have called for the timeout the moment it becomes available.
3

We have a game now: 21 for 1 in 5

Not that there was any threat because the rain has blown over, but we now will have a result either way. GT have been a little cagey, and MI have been on the offensive. Bumrah and Boult have bowled two each, and Gill has been careful not take any risks.
1
1
1

Dancing in the rain: 13 for 1 in 3

It has been raining for more than an over, but there is also a heavy wind to go with. The umpires have kept the players on, and batting hasn't been the easiest with the ball seaming around. Will the ball going into the damp outfield kill the moovement?
The five-over par score for the loss of one wicket is 34.

Seam movement for Boult: 6 for 1 in 1.2

There has been appreciable seam movement on offer tonight. Mohammed Siraj and Arshad Khan enjoyed it in the first innings, and Deepak Chahar and Trent Boult are doing so now. Boult beats the Sai Sudharsan outside edge first ball, and then takes the edged second ball.
GT might have the weather the storm a little.
1
1

A good final over for MI: 155 for 8

Corbin Bosch hits two sixes off Prasidh Krishna before being run out, and Deepak Chahar managed a four last ball to take MI to 155 for 8. The last 9.3 overs got them 6 for 58 despite that 18-run final over.
4
1

Rashid 4-0-21-1: 129 for 7 in 18

Rashid Khan is coming off a spell of 3-0-50-0, his worst economy rate in a single innings in a T20 match. And he has chipped in with 4-0-21-1, somewhere close to his best in bowling. The lengths were perfect, there was some fizz, and turn each way. He has had one good match before: 4-0-25-2 against KKR. GT will hope this turns it around for Rashid: three overs just outside the powerplay and one at the death, and the wicket of Will Jacks. n

Krishna's hard lengths get him another: 123 for 7

Wicket No. 20 for Prasidh Krishna this year as he makes a comeback from his 16-run first over. Just one off his second over, and then Naman Dhir charges him, Krishna digs it in, and an easy catch follows at mid-off.

Varma falls as well: 113 for 6 in 13.5

Mumbai Indians are now falling apart. Gerald Coetzee comes on to bowl for the first time, serves good gas and hard lengths. Tilak Varma finally tries to go over mid-off, but ends up hitting straight to the man. Shubman Gill takes it overhead. They have lost 4 for 16 in the last 3.2 overs.
2
1

Sai Kishore 4-0-34-2: 111 for 5 in 13

R Sai Kishore has not bowled a lot of overs because of unfavourable match-ups, but GT have always backed him. Now against a right-hand-heavy line-up, he has bowled all four in one go. Suryakumar Yadav hit him inside-out in hisn first over, but Shubman Gill stuck with Kishore, who displayed his guile. He got Surya on the inside-out shot and Hardik Pandya on the slog-sweep. He ends the night on 14 wickets this IPL. Only seven bowlers have taken more. Only Josh Hazlewood has taken more wickets than him at a better strike-rate than his 12.6.
1
1

GT get under Pandya's skin: 106 for 5 in 12.3

They invited Hardik Pandya to the wicket with a slip and a short leg for Rashid Khan. Then Sai Kishore gives Tilak Varma the single to bring the slip in for Hardik. Sai's control of length is impeccable. Hardik defends one, but then has a go. He is nowhere near the pitch of the ball, which Sai has turned hard, and the top edge on the slog-sweep is taken smartly by first slip running back.

Rashid finally has Jacks: 103 for 4 in 11.4

Will jacks is not picking Rashid Khan out of the hand, has been beaten often, but has burnt another review for Rashid in his third over. Eventually, though, he sweeps hard on length and sends it straight to deep square leg. B Sai Sudharsan takes the catch; he is 2-1 on catches now. Five false shots in nine balls bowled to Jacks. The fifth finally gets hom for 53 off 35.

Sai Kishore gets Surya: 97 for 3 in 10.4

Sai Kkishore dropped Suryakumar Yadav on 10, has been inside-outed by him later, has seen Surya get to 35 off 23, but he beats him in the air from over the wicket, following him even as Surya makes room. No power, and caught at long-off. GT finally hold on.

Fifty for Jacks: 96 for 2 in 10.2

This is Will Jacks' first fifty for MI. Comes up in just 29 balls. And brought up in style by skipping down the track, making room to Sai Kishore's over-the-wicket angle, and lofting him over long-off. Dropped twice, but he will take them all.
1
1

Rashid vs the umpire: 89 for 2 in 10

Two big lbw shouts against both the batters in the 10th over, both given not-out, both reviewed, and both tantalisingly close. Will Jacks is saved by the umpire's call on bounce. Surya's ball is bouncing over, which ends up costing GT the review.
Last four overs, all bowled by spin: 33 for 0.
1

Consistency max

12 Number of times in a row that Suryakumar Yadav has gone past 25. The record, so to speak, belongs to Temba Bavuma, one ahead of him. Surya also gets to 506 runs this IPL, which gives him the orange cap. Virat kohli is 505, Sai Sudharsan is 504.

2

Surya, Jacks keep rubbing it in: 76 for 2 in 8

Sai Kishore and Rashid Khan have bowled an over each outside the powerplay, but Suryakumar Yadav has taken 10 each off each of them. Sai he hit over extra cover, and Rashid he swept.
1

Dropping is catching on: 56 for 2 in 5.5

Will jacks has been given another life. It is that kind of a night. A straightforward push to Mohammed Siraj at the edge of the circle and midwicket, and he lets it slip through. All three bowlers have catches dropped off them now. Jacks on nought and 29, Surya on 10.
An angry-looking Ashish Nehra calls a timeout.
1
2

Sais having a bad fielding night: 39 for 2 in 4.5

Both the batters out in the middle have been dropped by catching men in front of the wicket. After Will Jacks was reprieved by Sai Suharsan, Sai Kishore has let slip a straightforward chance from Suryakumar Yadav. A flick straight to short midwicket, just over his head, but he lets it slip through. Also Prasidh Krishna's first over has been taken for 16.
3

Scratchy Rohit innings ends: 26 for 2 in 3.3

The left-arm seam bug is back to bite Rohit Sharma. He had got the better of it last year, scoring 240 off 148 against them in 2024. This year he has now been dismissed three times for 66 off 44. Arshad Khan has swung and seamed the ball in both his overs today, and Rohit has scored only three off six off him. He has tried various shots over the leg side with no success, and then he premeditates an inside-out shot. Ends up lobbing it to mid-off.

2

1

MI take off through Jacks: 25 for 1 in 3

The dropped catch is looking costly as Will Jacks has raced away to 16 off 10. He has used Mohammed Siraj's outswing to go over cover and mid-off. Rohit Sharma is 7 off 7, and he has tried two lap shots already.
1
2
1
3

Inswing, outswing, gone: 2 for 1 in 0.2

Mohammed Siraj starts with a full inswinger to Ryan Rickleton, who clips it off the toes for a nice easy couple. The next ball pitches and nips way, drawing a shot away from the body, which he fails to keep down. Caught at short cover. However, this is not a wobble-seam ball. This is seam-up, which Siraj often uses for right-to-left swing. So perhaps Rickleton has been unlucky here. Perhaps Siraj has developed a seam-up delivery that can seam either way instead of swinging.
Two balls later, Siraj draws a loose drive on a outswinging half-volley to Will jacks, but B Sai Sudharsan has dropped it at short cover.

GT chase, Arshad in for Washington

Gujarat Titans won the toss at Wankhede Stadium, and decided to do what teams do there: field first. No total is safe at Wankhede, given a true pitch, small boundaries and dew later in the night.
GT made one change to their team, bringing in left-arm quick Arshad Khan ahead of spinner-allrounder Washington Sundar. That tells you all you need to know about the conditions: little help for spin. Once again, GT were playing Rashid Khan at No. 7, which presents an opportunity for the opposition that can take early wickets. Sgubman Gill said they wanted to give Kagiso Rabada a couple more nets sessions before they draft him back into the XI.
Mumbai Indians remained unchanged, which meant Corbin Bosch continued to play against Mitchell Santner, whom he originally replaced thanks to a niggle. Santner was not on the list of possible Impact Players so it is possible he hasn't yet fully recovered.
Both teams were at 14 points and within a shot of the top position. GT had a game in hand. This game was crucial for both the sides with an eye on the top-two finish, which can guarantee you two matches in the playoffs.
Mumbai Indians 1 Ryan Rickelton (wk), 2 Rohit Sharma, 3 Will Jacks, 4 Suryakumar Yadav, 5 Tilak Varma, 6 Hardik Pandya (capt.), 7 Naman Dhir, 8 Corbin Bosch, 9 Deepak Chahar, 10 Trent Boult, 11 Jasprit Bumrah
Possible Impact Players Karn Sharma, Reece Topley, Robin Minz, Raj Bawa, Ashwani Kumar
Gujarat Titans 1 Shubman Gill (capt.), 2 B Sai Sudharsan, 3 Jos Buttler (wk), 4 M Shahrukh Khan, 5 Rahul Tewatia, 6 R Sai Kishore, 7 Rashid Khan, 8 Arshad Khan, 9 Gerald Coetzee, 10 Mohammed Siraj, 11 Prasidh Krishna
Possible Impact Players Sherfane Rutherford, Washington Sundar, Anuj Rawat, Mahipal Lomror, Dasun Shanaka

Conditions at Wankhede

We have a bias on the boundaries: 66m to 61m. This pitch os not fresh. This is the third match being played on it. The RCB-MI match featured huge runs. Then against CSK it lowered a little. Matthew Hayden says the pitch is good, and should offer 200 runs. He also talks about the possibility of some rain later.

A match we might see again

There's a very good chance these two teams could face each other again in this tournament. Tonight is the second match between Mumbai Indians and Gujarat Titans. In the first, GT ambushed MI on a black-soil pitch in Ahmedabad. Now they come up against each other at a crucial juncture. They want to win everything to make sure they finish in the top two. MI are at 14 after 11 games, on a six-match winning streak. GT are at 14 from 10 games. RCB are at 16 from 11. Not far from these three are PBKS.
The race for the top two is hotting up, and you don't want to lose anything now. Hardik Pandya is coming up against his former team, who happen to be the most consistent IPL side since they debuted. This is a mouth-watering clash. Welcome.
