Steve James (193 not out) and Matthew Elliot (177) together put on a record opening stand of 374 for Glamorgan against Sussex in the county championship. Both of them hit big hundreds and Chris Adams must be questioning his decision to put Glamorgan in to bat after winning the toss.
Matthew Elliot got out to paceman James Kirtley after playing on, bringing Michael Powell (48 not out) to the crease. He also joined the run feast as Glamorgan climbed to 457 for 1 at the end of day one. Elliot scored his fourth ton while James completed his third ton of the season.
Lancashire who need to win against Leicestershire to keep the pressure on Surrey, the table leaders, were pushed to a corner as Leicestershire made 362 for 7 with Aftab Habib making 93 and Phil Defreitas making 90 not out.
Derbyshire and Durham's poor batting resulted in 20 wickets falling on day one in a relegation clash at Derby. Derbyshire batted first and made 167 all out. Robert Bailey (54) and skipper Dominic Cork (45) put on a spirited stand of 81 for the seventh wicket. Simon Brown, Melvyn Betts and Steve Harmison took three wickets each. Durham then made 144 in reply with Kevin Dean claiming 6 for 52.
Hampshire playing against Kent and needing a win to avoid being relegated, allowed their opponents to make 268 for 9, Alan Mullaly taking 5 for 67.
In a Division Two match, Gloucestershire are in trouble at 157 for 7 in response to Middlesex's 207 with Phil Tufnell claiming 3 for 16 from 28 overs.
Warwickshire like Gloucestershire, batted poorly to end the day at 140 for 8 in reply to Worcestershire's 338 which includes 160 from Vikram Solanki. Ed Giddins picked up four wickets for Warwickshire.
