Jordan signs two-year deal with Surrey

Surrey's promising young fast bowler, Chris Jordan, has been rewarded for an outstanding debut season in county cricket with an upgraded two-year contract that will keep him on the full-time professional staff at The Oval until the end of 2009.

Jordan, 18, was handed a two-year summer contract with Surrey at the end of the 2006 season, but impressed from the moment of his debut against Middlesex at Lord's in the Pro40. He took the wicket of Owais Shah in figures of 1 for 43 from eight overs, then cemented his place in the County Championship side until the end of the season, taking 20 wickets in five matches at just 24.50.

Jordan was spotted in his native Barbados by the former England batsman Bill Athey, and harbours hopes of playing for West Indies, although he would qualify for England through his English grandmother who lives in Hertfordshire.

Surrey have also retained the services of their opening batsman, Scott Newman, with a three-year contract. Newman had a brilliant all-round season with the bat, particularly in the limited-overs format. He supported his 812 County Championship runs with 378 in the Pro40 at an average of 54, including a matchwinning innings of 94 not out against Kent at Canterbury.

Alan Butcher, Surrey's cricket manager, said: "It is great news that Chris and Scott have committed themselves to Surrey. Chris announced himself this season as a major talent although only 18 and fresh out of school while Scott learned a lot about himself and the game in general this season which will stand him in good stead for future years. The best is yet to come from both players."
