Canterbury posted the highest one-day score by a provincial women's
cricket side, amassing 302 for five from 50 overs to crush Otago by
159 runs in a State Insurance women's league match.
Canterbury reached the imposing tally on the back of a Debbie Hockley
hundred and quickfire half-centuries by Jo Lawler and Nicola Payne at
Hagley Oval yesterday.
Hockley anchored one end reaching 117 from 143 balls with eight 4s
while Lawler contributed 58 from 54 balls with six fours and Payne a
similarly speedy 56 from 49 balls with three fours.
Otago was unable to match that run rate and was never in contention
reaching 143 for nine from its 50 overs with only Rowan Milburn and
Erin Kelly, from Christchurch in her senior provincial debut, making
much progress.
Hockley and fellow opener Paula Flannery added 74 for the first
wicket. She then teamed with Lawler to plunder 107 in 59 minutes and
then 98 with Payne in just 59 minutes. The high scoring contrasted
with the low-scoring struggle the previous day when the two sides met
at Rangiora's Dudley Park. On a wicket which had been covered after
drizzle the previous day Canterbury, sent in by Otago, was restricted
to 173 for nine.
It was in trouble at 71 for five the wicket offering the bowlers
assistance until Lawler and Helen Watson came together adding 53 for
the sixth wicket to push Canterbury toward a defendable tally.
Otago also struggled against the Canterbury attack being dismissed
for 96 with only Rachel Pullar unbeaten on 26 making much headway.
Hockley contributed with the ball capturing three for six.
Canterbury's brace of wins leaves it equal second on the table in
pursuit of Auckland which has now finished its campaign after twice
beating Central Districts in Auckland.
Points, with games played in parenthesis: Auckland 12 (8), Canterbury
6 (4), Wellington 6 (6), Otago 4 (6), Central Districts 0 (4).
