North Zone won the Under 19 level CK Nayudu Trophy at Chennai on December 31st as they maintained their all win record by inflicting a six wicket defeat on West Zone at the Guru Nanak College ground. In the day's other match at the Southern Railway ground, South Zone beat wooden spoonists East Zone by 68 runs to finish runners up. North Zone will take on the Rest of India for the Vinoo Mankad Trophy at the MAC Stadium in Chepauk tomorrow.
West Zone made 204-6 from 50 overs after being put in to bat. The highlight of the innings was a 125 run second wicket parnership between PP Joshi (71, 110 balls, 3 fours) and captain NK Patel (56, 85 balls, 4 fours). But after Patel departed in the 35th over, West were pegged down and could score only 58 from the last 15 overs. For North the bowlers to stand out were Yuvraj Singh with 2-39 from 9 overs and Amit Suman with 1-25 from 10.
North then got to their victory target of 205 with twenty balls to spare. Yuvraj Singh, captaining the side in the absence of RS Sodhi, was again the man of the moment, stroking his way to 68 from 67 balls. An unbroken fifth wicket stand of 52 between A Ratra (25) and SP Singh (27) completed the job for North.
After winning the toss and electing to bat South were all out for 236 in 48 overs. Although South stumbled to 81-4 in the 24th over, there was a middle order rally by NA Yadav (46) and DS Doss (61) who put on 79 for the fifth wicket in 14.2 overs. Doss was especially punishing, hitting 5 fours and 3 sixes in his 59 ball knock. Vidyuth and Lazarus also hit two sixes apiece but a couple of run outs towards the end meant that South had contrived to leave two overs unused. For East RN Ghosh was the most successful bowler with 3-45.
East never looked to be in the hunt as they kept losing wickets at regular intervals. No one reached 30 and East competed a miserable tournament by surrendering in the 46th over for 168. Kerala leggie CM Shyam took 3-45 with all six South bowlers being among the wickets.
